Segra Stadium is a baseball park in downtown Fayetteville, North Carolina. It is the home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, a Minor League Baseball team playing in the Carolina League. It opened in 2019 and seats up to 4,600 people. [1] The site is immediately surrounded by the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, Fayetteville station, and the Prince Charles Hotel. Segra Stadium is also the home of some of Fayetteville's most popular annual events, such as Pecktoberfest, Fayetteville Holiday Lights, and Eastern NC Walk to End Alzheimer's. [8]
Fayetteville lacked minor league baseball since the Cape Fear Crocs moved to Lakewood, New Jersey after the 2000 season. The team is now called the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. [9]
On August 17, 2016, the City of Fayetteville signed a memorandum of understanding with the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball to keep a Class A team club at the ballpark for 30 years. [10] As part of the deal, Barton Malow contracted 83 percent of the construction to local and Small Disadvantaged Business Enterprise contractors. [11]
In conjunction with the ballpark financing, Prince Charles Holdings plans to invest $15 million toward renovating the adjoining Prince Charles Hotel into apartments. The company also intends to invest an additional $60 million toward a hotel, 150 residential units, 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) of retail space, and a parking garage at the same stadium site. [12] [13]
Groundbreaking took place on August 21, 2017. [2] On February 7, 2019, the team announced a naming rights agreement with Segra, an independent fiber bandwidth company, to call the facility Segra Stadium. [14] A ribbon cutting and tours were held on April 13. [15]
The ballpark's first game was held on April 18, 2019, between the Woodpeckers and the Carolina Mudcats. [3] Carolina defeated Fayetteville, 7–5, before a sellout crowd of 6,202 people. [16] Fayetteville starting pitcher Enoli Paredes recorded the stadium's first strikeouts as he retired the first three Mudcats batters on strikes to open the game. [17] The first hit was a single in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of Fayetteville's Bryan De La Cruz. [17] The first home run was hit in the top of the second inning by Carolina's Payton Henry. [17]
Besides being the home field for the Astros affiliate, the ballpark hosted the Big South Tournament as a neutral site May 21–25, 2019, and plans to do so again in 2021. [18] The 2020 tournament at Segra Stadium was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. [19]
From February 28 to March 1, 2020, Segra Stadium hosted the Armed Forces Invitational Baseball Tournament between Army West Point Black Knights, the Air Force Academy Falcons, and Campbell University Fighting Camels. [20] In the round-robin style tournament, each team played a two-game series with the others over the course of three days. All three teams split both series, going 2–2 on the weekend. [21]
Segra Stadium is set to host the Second Annual Jackie Robinson Showcase on May 5, 2023. This is a baseball tournament showcasing six high school baseball teams within the Fayetteville area. The tournament highlights the local talent while giving athletes a chance to play under the big lights at Segra Stadium. [22]
The Augusta GreenJackets are a Minor League Baseball team of the Carolina League and the Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. They play their home games at SRP Park in North Augusta, South Carolina.
The Bakersfield Blaze were a minor league baseball team in Bakersfield, California. They played in the California League at the Class A-Advanced level, hosting home games at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Opened in 1941, the stadium is well known for facing the setting sun and its shallow 354-foot (108 m) center field fence, and seats 3,500 fans.
Intimidators Stadium was a baseball stadium in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Opened in 1995, it was the home venue for the Kannapolis Intimidators, the Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
Lake Olmstead Stadium is a baseball park in Augusta, Georgia, United States. It was built between the 1994 and 1995 seasons to replace Heaton Stadium on the same site and can hold 4,822 people. The stadium also serves as an outdoor-arena style event venue.
J. P. Riddle Stadium is a stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina owned by Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC). It is primarily used for baseball and was the home of the Fayetteville Generals/Cape Fear Crocs baseball team. The ballpark has a capacity of 2,500 to 5,000 people and opened in 1987. J. P. Riddle Stadium is currently home to the FTCC Trojans. It was the 19-year home of the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the collegiate summer baseball Coastal Plain League. The SwampDogs announced on October 3, 2019 that they would sit out the 2020 Coastal Plain League season and relocate afterwards, having failed to reach a new lease agreement. The stadium has been nicknamed the Swamp.
Jim Perry Stadium is a baseball stadium in Buies Creek, North Carolina. It is home to the Campbell Fighting Camels baseball team. Previously known as Taylor Field, the venue dates back to the 1940s and Campbell's junior college baseball days. Taylor Field was named for Herbert B. Taylor, a supporter of Campbell University's athletics programs. Following the 2012 season, the field was renamed for Jim Perry, who played baseball and basketball for Campbell from 1956 to 1959. Perry later pitched for 17 seasons in Major League Baseball, earning the 1970 American League Cy Young Award with the Minnesota Twins.
