Self Made (Hebrew: Boreg) is a 2014 Israeli film directed by Shira Geffen.
The film follows an Israeli artist (Michal) and Palestinian DIY store clerk (Nadine) who swap their lives because of a mix-up at a border security checkpoint. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
The film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival and at the Jerusalem Film Festival. [1] It was also shown at the opening night of the AICE Israeli Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia. [5]
In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Clarence Tsui said the film was full of "black humor" and "surreal episodes to talk about gritty issues in reality." [2] She added, "What Geffen is trying to put across is how an individual's appearance is just a façade." [2] She concluded that it was, "an entertaining and pensive thought about the straitjackets imposed on women or maybe just about everyone else too." [2]
Nadine Labaki is a Lebanese and Canadian actress, director, and activist. Labaki first came into the spotlight as an actress in the early 2000s. Her filmmaking career began in 2007 after the release of her debut film, Caramel, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She is known for demonstrating everyday aspects of Lebanese life and covering a range of political issues such as war, poverty, and feminism. She is the first female Arab director to be nominated for an Oscar in the category for Best Foreign Language Film for third directorial effort, Capernaum (2018).

Twenty two films from twelve countries were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or. The awards were announced on 26 May. Romanian film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, directed by Cristian Mungiu, was awarded with the Palme.

Yaron played lead character Shira Mendelman in the 2012 Israeli drama film, Fill the Void. In September of that year, she received an Ophir Award and became the first Israeli to win Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.

Trap is a 2015 Filipino drama film directed by Brillante Mendoza and starring Nora Aunor, Julio Diaz, Lou Veloso and Aaron Rivera. In 2020, she gained international acclaim for her role in the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox. For this performance, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. In the same year, Haas won the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best International Actress for her performance in the Israeli drama film Asia (2020). She has since starred in the Netflix science fiction series Bodies (2023).
Capernaum is a 2018 Lebanese drama film directed by Nadine Labaki and produced by Khaled Mouzanar. The screenplay was written by Labaki, Jihad Hojaily and Michelle Keserwany from a story by Labaki, Hojaily, Keserwany, Georges Khabbaz and Khaled Mouzanar. The film stars Syrian refugee child actor Zain Al Rafeea as Zain El Hajj, a 12-year-old living in the slums of Beirut. Capernaum is told in flashback format, focusing on Zain's life, including his encounter with an Ethiopian immigrant Rahil and her infant son Yonas, and leading up to his attempt to sue his parents for child neglect.
Dead Souls is a 2018 documentary film directed by Wang Bing and documents the testimony of survivors of the hard-labor camp in the Gobi Desert in Gansu, China. Shot from 2005 to 2017, the film covers most of China's provinces with visits to more than 120 survivors of the Jiabiangou and Mingshui reeducation camps set up by China's Communist regime in the late 1950s. It made its world premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

After winning Best Picture at the 30th Israeli Academy Awards, it was automatically submitted as the Israeli entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film won eight additional Israeli Academy Awards out of a total twelve nominations, including both Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Menemsha Films gained North American distribution rights to the film in June 2020, and announced its theatrical premiere at Film Forum in New York City in 2020.
