The Serbia and Montenegro Women's Handball Championship was the premier championship for women's handball clubs in FR Yugoslavia (between 1992 and 2003) and Serbia and Montenegro (between 2003 and 2006), before the split of the country. It succeeded Yugoslav Championship after 1992-1993 season. The last season was disputed in 2005-2006.
Serbia and Montenegro, also known as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, and known as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1992 to 2003, was a country in Southeast Europe, created from the two remaining federal republics of Yugoslavia after its breakup in 1992. The republics of Serbia and Montenegro together established a federation in 1992 as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia or Yugoslavia for short.
The Yugoslav Women's Handball Championship was the premier championship for women's handball clubs in SFR Yugoslavia. Founded like its male counterpart in 1953, it was dissolved in 1992 following the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Jugoslovensko sportsko društvo Partizan, commonly abbreviated as JSD Partizan, is a multi-sport club from Belgrade, Serbia. Founded on October 4, 1945, it is an umbrella organization featuring 26 clubs in 26 different sports.
The First League of Serbia and Montenegro was the top football league of Serbia and Montenegro, before the country's dissolution in 2006. The league was formed following the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992, effectively succeeding the Yugoslav First League.
The Sports in Montenegro revolves mostly around team sports, such as football, basketball, water polo, volleyball, and handball. Other sports involved are boxing, tennis, swimming, judo, karate, athletics, table tennis, and chess.
Most popular sport is football. Among many great players from Montenegro were Dejan Savićević, Predrag Mijatović, Mirko Vučinić or Stevan Jovetić. Montenegrin national football team, founded at 2006, played in playoffs for UEFA Euro 2012, which is the biggest success in the history of national team.
Water polo is often considered the national sport. Montenegro's national team is one of the top ranked teams in the world, winning the gold medal at the 2008 Men's European Water Polo Championship in Málaga, Spain, and winning the gold medal at the 2009 FINA Men's Water Polo World League, which was held in Montenegrin capital, Podgorica. Montenegrin team PVK Primorac from Kotor became a champion of Europe at the LEN Euroleague 2009 in Rijeka, Croatia.
The Montenegro national basketball team is also known for good performances and had won a lot of medals in the past as part of the Yugoslavia national basketball team. In 2006, the Basketball Federation of Montenegro along with this team joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on its own, following the Independence of Montenegro. Montenegro participated on two Eurobaskets until now.
Among women sports, the national handball team is the most successful, having won the 2012 European Championship and finishing as runner-ups at the 2012 Summer Olympics. ŽRK Budućnost Podgorica won two times EHF Champions League.
Montenegro was independent from the late middle ages until 1918, when it declared its union with Serbia and, subsequently, became part of various incarnations of Yugoslavia and the state union of Serbia and Montenegro. During this time, football in Montenegro was part of the wider Yugoslavian structures. As a result of the Montenegrin independence referendum held on May 21, 2006, Montenegro declared independence two weeks later, on June 3, and formed its own football association.

Bojana Popović, née Petrović is a Montenegrin handballer. She is considered by many to be the best female handball player of the past decade, despite not being given any official recognition. After winning the Women's EHF Champions League with Budućnost and a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games with the Montenegro national team, Bojana Popović decided to retire from handball. However, in June 2016 Popović announced she would come out of retirement and make herself available for selection by the Montenegro national handball team to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The Handball League of Serbia is the top men's handball league in Serbia. It was founded in 2006. From 2010, the league is also known as Merkur osiguranje Handball Superleague for sponsorship reasons.

Until 2006, the organization has represented Serbia and Montenegro in FIBA and the men's and women's national basketball teams in the Olympic Committee of Serbia and Montenegro.
