Shake It Records (often stylized Shake It! Records) is a record label and record store in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is co-owned by brothers Jim and Darren Blase. [1] As of 2010, their record store had almost 20,000 CDs and 50,000 vinyl records for sale. [2]

History

Shake It Records was founded in 1979 by Jess Hirbe and Daryl "Doc" Kalmus, to release albums by Cincinnati-area bands like the Customs. [3] In the early 1990s, Darren Blase called Hirbe, who had by then sold the record store, to ask if he could revive the label. Hirbe said yes, and in 1992, Blase acquired the label in return for a copy of the Jack Dupree album Blues in the Gutter. By 1999, the label had become the most active one dedicated to punk rock and roots rock in Cincinnati. [4] In 1999, Blase re-opened the Shake It record store. [5] Jim and Darren Blase opened up their current location on 4156 Hamilton Ave on September 11, 2001. [6]

Compilations

In 2009, Shake It released the Eddie Hinton tribute album Dangerous Highway: A Tribute To The Songs Of Eddie Hinton, which features covers of Hinton's songs by artists such as Dan Auerbach and Greg Dulli. [7] The label has also released multiple compilations of soul songs by Cincinnati-area artists. [8]

The Kentucky Headhunters American country rock and Southern rock band

The Kentucky Headhunters are an American country rock and Southern rock band consisting of Doug Phelps, Greg Martin, and brothers Richard Young and Fred Young. They were founded in 1968 as Itchy Brother, which consisted of the Young brothers and Martin, along with Anthony Kenney on bass and vocals. Itchy Brother performed together until 1982, with James Harrison replacing Martin from 1973 to 1976. The Youngs and Martin began performing as The Kentucky Headhunters in 1986, adding brothers Ricky Lee Phelps and Doug Phelps to the membership.

Temposhark English electronic rock band

Temposhark was an English electronic rock band, formed in London and Brighton by singer-songwriter Robert Diament and one-time music producer Luke Busby. Temposhark were best known for their songs Bye Bye Baby, Joy, It's Better To Have Loved and Not That Big; a duet with singer Imogen Heap which appeared on their 2008 debut album The Invisible Line. Their second album Threads was released in 2010 and reached the top 15 on iTunes UK electronic albums chart. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were an American funk and soul band signed to Daptone Records. They were part of a revivalist movement of mid-1960s to mid-1970s style funk and soul music. They released their debut album Dap Dippin' in 2002, the first of seven studio albums. Their 2014 album Give the People What They Want was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Following Sharon Jones' death in 2016, the band released the posthumous final album Soul of a Woman in 2017. A compilation of cover songs was also released in 2020. The Dap-Kings, the Daptone house band, continue to work with other artists and performed together live through 2018.

"Carbona Not Glue" is a song by the Ramones from their second album, Leave Home (1977).

"Breakfast in Bed" is a soul–R&B song written by Muscle Shoals songwriters Eddie Hinton and Donnie Fritts for Dusty Springfield. It takes a knowing spin on the line "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", the title of a song that had previously been a number one hit for her in the UK. After being released on her 1969 album Dusty in Memphis, it was recorded and popularized the same year by Baby Washington.

Eddie Hinton was an American songwriter and session musician, best known for his work with soul music and R&B singers. He played lead guitar for Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section from 1967 to 1971 and after leaving the band, he was replaced by Pete Carr as lead guitarist.

Wussy

Wussy is an American five-piece indie rock band formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2001. The band consists of Chuck Cleaver (vocals/guitar), Lisa Walker (vocals/guitar), John Erhardt, Joe Klug (drums) and Mark Messerly (bass). Cleaver and Walker write most of the songs and either alternate lead vocals or sing them in harmony. Live performances feature the two vocalists having a "combative rapport". They have released six albums, one live album, two EPs, one mini LP and a number of singles. The group has received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Robert Christgau, Chicago, and SPIN.

Funeral Dress, the debut album by Wussy, was released on December 6, 2005. The label, Shake It Records, released the album on CD format only.

Damnably is a small, independent record label & publisher based in London, which also organises live events and tours for its roster of acts.

Strawberry, the fourth studio album by Wussy, was released in November 2011. The label, Shake It Records, released the album on CD format in limited cities in 2011 with a national release in February 2012 and a vinyl edition planned for Record Store Day 2012.

Attica! is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Wussy. It was released on May 5, 2014 on Damnably in the United Kingdom, making it their first studio album to be released there, and the following day on Shake It Records in the United States.
