Shalimar Television Network (STN) was the first semi governmental television channel of Pakistan, the first to break up the monopoly of state-owned Pakistan Television (PTV). STN started its broadcast in 1990 with the name of People's Television Network (PTN) under the umbrella of Shalimar Recording Company from Islamabad. Later on, its transmissions were started from Karachi, Lahore and by the mid-1990s, it was available in the whole country at terrestrial beam. In 1991, the name of PTN was changed to STN (Shalimar TV Network) [1]

History

PTN under settlements with CNN International of USA and British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC of UK started rebroadcast of the programming of CNN International channel and BBC World. In the same year, PTN in an agreement with Interflow (a private company) started a time slot by the name of , Network Television Marketing (NTM) which came as a breath of fresh air after General Zia-ul-Haq's military dictatorship era of the 1980s; with its unique and entertainment-filled programming, it gave tough competition to PTV at prime time evening TV viewing time. STN as Channel-3

In 1999, NTM had to quit the airwaves because of the financial crunch, due to charges of corruption and the massification of VCRs. [2] Right after this, STN also ended the re-broadcast programs of CNN International, BBC World and DW. In 1999, under a settlement with PTV Network, STN became "Channel-3". [1]

Replacement of STN by ATV

In 2005, STN/Channel-3 went off the air and the parent company Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Company signed an agreement with Sports Star International to start the first ever semi-private channel of Pakistan ATV (Pakistan) channel; the collaboration stayed intact till 2018. From 2018-2020, ATV ran solely under SRBC solely as a semi-government TV Channel. In 2020, it again got a partner from private sector. [3]

Network Television Marketing or NTM was Pakistan's first private television slot. The company's productions first aired on Peoples TV Network in 1990. In the 1990s, PTN entered into a three-year agreement with Interflow and created NTM Its broadcasts on STN started in 1992, alongside the channel. One of its initial figures was Tahir Khan, who later owned TV One.

Mass media in Pakistan provides information on television, radio, cinema, newspapers, and magazines in Pakistan. Pakistan has a vibrant media landscape; among the most dynamic in South Asia and world. Majority of media in Pakistan is privately owned. Pakistan has around 300 privately owned daily newspapers. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, they had a combined daily sale of 6.1 million copies in 2009. Television is the main source of news and information for people in Pakistan's towns, cities and large areas of the countryside. Marketing research company Gallup Pakistan, estimated there were 86 million TV viewers in Pakistan in 2009.

Asad's other PTV Plays was 'Moum', 'Hawa, Rait Aur Angan' and 'Aurat Ka Ghar Konsa'. I’m Sorry Noor Pakistan’s 1st short film released on Amazon prime. Badar Khalil, also known as 'Baddo Aapa', is a Pakistani television actress. She gained popularity for her role in the TV play Bi Jamalo portraying herself as Bi Jamalo. She is one of the most popular actress of her time and was one of the most successful actress of 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Later on, she appeared in many as hit TV serials on PTV from 1968 to now. She also did a TV show Mithu Aur Aapa, a critically acclaimed comedy play on Hum TV.

Asghar Nadeem Syed is a Pakistani playwright, TV drama serial writer and poet. He has written shows for the Pakistani state channel, PTV, Shalimar Television Network.

Nighat Chaudhry is a Kathak classical dancer who was born on 24 February 1959, in Lahore, Pakistan. She moved to London with her parents when she was one year old. Yawar Sultana, also known as Naina was a Pakistani actress and model. She was known for her deep blue eyes and was known as Doe-eyed Beauty. She was known for her roles in classic dramas Dasht, Sadran and Red Card.
