Sharifah Czarena is a Bruneian pilot, who was the first woman from Brunei to captain a commercial airliner. She was initially seconded to Loganair, where she flew the Saab 340. Since flying for Royal Brunei Airlines, she has flown Boeing 767s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Career

Sharifah Czarena trained as a pilot cadet in 2003, taking her lessons at the Cabair Flying School, Cranfield. [1] After graduating in 2004, she was seconded from Royal Brunei Airlines to Scottish carrier Loganair for two years, flying the Saab 340. [1] [2] On her return to Royal Brunei Airlines, she flew the Boeing 767 as a First Officer. [1]

Czarena was promoted to Senior First Officer in 2007, and to Captain in 2012. [1] She was the first woman from Brunei and Southeast Asia to become the captain of a commercial airliner. [3] At the time, she said "Being a pilot, people normally see it as being a male dominant occupation. As a woman, a Bruneian woman, it is such a great achievement. It’s really showing the younger generation or the girls especially that whatever they dream of, they can achieve it." [4]

In 2016, she made history as the Captain of the first all female flight crew to land in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, [5] a country at which time did not allow women to get driving licences. The flight was timed to celebrate Brunei's National Day. [6] Alongside her in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner were Senior First Officers Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem and Sariana Nordin. [3]

Royal Brunei (RB) Airlines Sdn Bhd is the national flag carrier airline of Brunei Darussalam, headquartered in the RB Campus in Bandar Seri Begawan. It is wholly owned by the government of Brunei. Its hub is Brunei International Airport in Berakas, just to the north of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a wide-body jet airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After dropping its Sonic Cruiser project, Boeing announced the conventional 7E7 on January 29, 2003, focused on efficiency. The program was launched on April 26, 2004, with an order for 50 from All Nippon Airways (ANA), targeting a 2008 introduction. On July 8, 2007, the prototype was rolled out without major systems, and experienced multiple delays until its maiden flight on December 15, 2009. Type certification was received in August 2011 and the first 787-8 was delivered in September 2011 before entering commercial service on October 26, 2011, with ANA.

On 12 November 1996, Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763, a Boeing 747 en route from Delhi, India, to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907, an Ilyushin Il-76 en route from Chimkent, Kazakhstan, to Delhi, collided over the village of Charkhi Dadri, around 100 km west of Delhi. The crash killed all 349 people on board both planes, making it the world's deadliest mid-air collision and the deadliest aviation accident to occur in India.

Lynn became the first woman to captain the "jumbo jet" across the Atlantic Ocean while at People Express Airlines in 1984. Lynn started her aviation career as a TWA flight attendant in 1972 before obtaining a departmental transfer to pilot as a TWA B-727 flight engineer. She was first officer on the first all-female crew for a scheduled commercial US carrier with Captain Emilie Jones, flying an Air Illinois, DHC-6 Twin Otter, 30 December 1977. This event was featured in the PBS documentary series We'll Meet Again with Ann Curry on Jan 8, 2019. In 1982 at People Express, Rippelmeyer was a co-captain on the first all female Boeing 737 crew. Captain Amsale Gualu is an Ethiopian pilot. In 2010 she became the first female captain in the history of Ethiopia. She is also the first female captain on the Boeing 767, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 in Ethiopia. Additionally Captain Amsale Gualu became the second African female pilot to command a Boeing 787.

Airline Captain Irene Koki Mutungi, commonly known as Koki Mutungi, is a professional pilot in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. She was the first female on the African continent to become certified as a Captain of the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" aircraft. She flies for Kenya Airways, the national airline of Kenya.

Carol Rabadi is a Jordanian airline pilot, one of the first for Royal Jordanian. In 2009, she was the Captain of the first all Arab female flight crew on a Royal Jordanian flight. Carol was a Line instructor, a simulator Instructor and a line check Captain on the A320 aircraft.
