Mark "Sharkey" McEwen is an American, California-born musician and record producer, currently living in the Hudson Valley area of New York . He is the lead guitarist for the group Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, aka The Grand Slambovians, where he also plays mandolin and provides backup vocals. [1]

Biography

Born into a musical family, Mark "Sharkey" McEwen began learning to play the electric guitar from his older brother from the age of 11. In the mid to late 1970s, he performed in a number of rock groups around his home turf of northern California, and was performing professionally by the age of 17. In 1980 McEwen moved to Hollywood, CA and in 1981 was a founding member of the LA based group Boy along with Freddy Moore, who released the EP "Boy Next Door" in 1983. From 1985, McEwen took a few years off from music in pursuit of a deeper purpose. Shortly after moving to New York in 1990, Sharkey joined the New York City based hard rock group, The Ancestors, who released the album Brigadoon in 1994 which he co-produced. In 1998, Joziah Longo, Tink Lloyd, Tony Zuzulo and Sharkey McEwen formed the Hudson Valley-based group, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, with whom he continues to perform. His son Ben McEwen plays with him from time to time performing at local venues under the name Sharkey & The Sparks.

Band Aid was the collective name of a charity supergroup featuring mainly British and Irish musicians and recording artists. It was founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year. On 25 November 1984, the song was recorded at Sarm West Studios in Notting Hill, London, and was released in the UK on Monday 3 December. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release. Three re-recordings of the song to raise further money for charity also topped the charts, first the Band Aid II version in 1989 and the Band Aid 20 version in 2004 and finally the Band Aid 30 version in 2014. The original was produced by Ure. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn.

The Slambovian Circus of Dreams is a Hudson Valley, New York based band which was founded in Sleepy Hollow in 1998. The band's music is a form of folk rock, americana and is sometimes described as "Hillbilly Pink Floyd," or "Punk Classical Hillbilly Floyd. Their sixth studio album, A Very Unusual Head was released Jan 2022 on their own label, Storm King Records and in May 2022 on Talking Elephant Records for UK/EU release. A Box of Everything a greatest hits compilation was released April 1, 2014, on the Red River Entertainment label.
