Shayne Campbell (born November 18, 1972) is a former Canadian soccer player who played in Canadian National Soccer League, USL A-League, National Professional Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League, and the Canadian Professional Soccer League.

Playing career

Campbell began his career in 1994 with St. Catharines Wolves of the Canadian National Soccer League. [1] In 1995, he helped the club achieve a treble, winning the Umbro Cup by defeating the Scarborough Astros on a penalty shootout. [2] In the playoff finals the Wolves defeated the Toronto Jets by a score of 2–1. In 1996, he signed with the Edmonton Drillers of the National Professional Soccer League. [3] During his tenure with Edmonton he served with the club for four seasons and appeared in 154 matches and recorded 12 goals. [4] [5] Overall he had a successful time with Edmonton finishing runners-up three times in their division, and winning the Conference title in the 1998/1999 season. In 1998, he signed with Hampton Roads Mariners of the USL A-League. He finished third in the Atlantic Division, and qualified for the postseason.

Campbell returned to St. Catharines for the 1999 season, but failed to clinch a postseason by finishing sixth in the standings. In 2000, he signed with Philadelphia KiXX where he appeared in 43 matches, and scored four goals. In the 2001/2002 indoor season, he was transferred to the Cleveland Crunch where he appeared in 17 matches, and recorded two goals. In 2003, he signed with Mississauga Olympians of the Canadian Professional Soccer League. [6] During his time with Mississauga he failed to clinch a playoff berth by finishing sixth in the Western Conference. After retiring from competitive soccer he was hired assistant coach under Randy Ragan for the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team. [7]

Ottawa Wizards were a Canadian soccer club which operated in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), from 2001 to 2003. The team's home stadium was the OZ Optics Stadium. Though the team had a relatively short tenure with the CPSL, the club dominated the league by winning three consecutive regular season championships, two Open Canada Cups, and the CPSL Championship. Despite the club's success the franchise was revoked by the league in 2003 after several legal disputes with the CPSL administration.

The 2002 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the fifth season for the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The season began on May 23, 2002, and concluded on October 20, 2002, with Ottawa Wizards becoming the first expansion franchise to win the CPSL Championship by defeating the North York Astros 2–0. For the first time the final was hosted at Esther Shiner Stadium, which granted the hosts the North York Astros a wildcard match. As the league was divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences the Wizards clinched the Eastern title, while Toronto Croatia won the Western Conference. The expansion of the league saw the return of professional soccer to Hamilton, and the addition of another Toronto franchise. On February 26, 2002, the CPSL signed a player agreement deal with the Toronto Lynx of the USL A-League, which provided the Lynx access in order to use CPSL talent and provide players an opportunity to play at a higher level.

The 1998Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the inaugural season under the Canadian Professional Soccer League name. The season began on May 31, 1998, and concluded on October 14, 1998, with the St. Catharines Wolves defeating the Toronto Olympians in 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout to claim the first CPSL Championship held at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. Though Toronto was denied the treble they still managed to go undefeated the entire regular season, and dominate the league with the best offensive and defensive record.
