Sherry Boston serves as the district attorney for DeKalb County, Georgia, which includes a portion of Atlanta, as well as several smaller metro-area cities. [1] Boston was first elected to the position in 2016 after defeating incumbent DA Robert James, a fellow Democrat, in the primary. Boston ran on an anti-corruption platform. [2] She is the second woman to serve as DA in DeKalb County. [3]

As district attorney, Boston oversees a staff of approximately 300 attorneys, investigators, victim-witness advocates and other employees whose job is to prosecute felony cases in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit. [4] Before becoming DA, Boston served as DeKalb County's Solicitor-General, a position Gov. Sonny Perdue, a Republican, appointed her to fill in January 2011. [5] Boston started her career as a defense attorney. She was the first woman ever appointed to serve as municipal court judge for the City of Dunwoody. [3]

On August 2, 2023, Boston lead a bipartisan group of four district attorneys who filed a lawsuit against the State of Georgia aimed at striking down Senate Bill 92 (SB92). [6] The new law created a commission of political appointees empowered to investigate, discipline and even remove elected prosecutors from office, named the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission (PAQC). [7] The plaintiffs argued the law violates both the Georgia Constitution and the U.S. Constitution by limiting their First Amendment rights to free speech, as well as violating the separation of powers between the judicial, legislative and executive branches of state government. [8]

On December 8, 2023 the plaintiffs filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit after the Georgia Supreme Court issued an order declining to review the rules for the PAQC. In the order, the Supreme Court raised questions about the constitutionality of the statute and whether district attorneys fall under the judicial or executive branches of governments. The court's decision prevented the commission from moving forward because SB92 required Supreme Court approval before the commission could operate. [9]

Initiatives

Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Boston has worked to raise awareness of domestic violence and teen dating violence. [10] [11] Every February, Boston hosts the Love Run 5K, a fundraiser for the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence in DeKalb County. [12] WRC honored her with a Champion for Change award in 2018. [13]

Boston has also worked to address gun violence by establishing a Firearm Violence Prevention unit. [13]

Under Boston's leadership, in 2019 DeKalb County became the first district attorney's office in the state to require that all staff members undergo implicit bias training. [14] [15]

Personal life

Boston was born in Maryland and grew up in Baltimore County. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was a machinist. [16] Boston graduated from Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pa. and completed her law degree at Emory University's School of Law in Atlanta. Boston lives in DeKalb County with her husband and two daughters. [13]

Mike Jacobs is an American trial judge and former Republican politician from Georgia. Jacobs was appointed to the fifth district of the State Court of DeKalb County by Governor Nathan Deal in 2015 district five, and was unopposed for reelection in 2016 and 2020. In 2018, Jacobs became the first sitting judge in the United States to come out as bisexual. He is also the first openly LGBTQ countywide elected official in DeKalb County history.

She presided over several high-profile cases, including the criminal trial of former Sheriff Sidney Dorsey and the release of exonerated Clarence Harrison.

The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is a school district headquartered at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, near Stone Mountain and in the Atlanta metropolitan area. DCSD operates public schools in areas of DeKalb County that are not within the city limits of Atlanta and Decatur. It will serve a portion of Atlanta annexed by that city in 2018 until 2024, when that portion will be re-assigned to Atlanta Public Schools (APS).

Eleanor Louise Ross is a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and former judge of the DeKalb County State Court.

The shooting of Anthony Hill, a U.S. Air Force veteran, occurred on March 9, 2015, in Chamblee, Georgia, near Atlanta. Hill, fatally shot by police officer Robert Olsen, suffered from mental illness and was naked and unarmed at the time of the incident. The incident was covered in local and national press and sparked the involvement of Black Lives Matter and other advocacy groups who demonstrated their anger at the shooting. In January 2016, a grand jury indicted officer Olsen on two counts of felony murder and one count of aggravated assault. Nearing the fourth anniversary of the homicide, it was decided that Olsen's trial would be rescheduled for September 23, 2019, with delays including three successive judges having recused themselves in the case.

Michael Stephen Wilensky is a politician and attorney who lives in Dunwoody, Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented District 79 in the Georgia House of Representatives, which is 100% in Dekalb County. State House District 79 consists of all of Dunwoody, part of Doraville, and a small piece of Chamblee. Wilensky defeated the Republican Party opponent, Ken Wright, on November 6, 2018. Wilensky won his second election in 2020 and served a second term. In February 2022, Wilensky decided not to run for reelection.

Clinton Randall Dixon is an American politician from Georgia. He is a Republican member of the Georgia State Senate for District 45.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Georgia state elections</span>

Several elections took place in the U.S. state of Georgia in 2022. The general election was held on November 8, 2022. A runoff election for one of Georgia's seats in the United States Senate was held on December 6, 2022. The runoff was scheduled because none of the candidates for Senate received 50% of the statewide vote in the general election. In addition to the Senate seat, all of Georgia's seats in the United States House of Representatives were up for election. Also up for election were all of Georgia's executive officers and legislative seats, as well as one seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission. The Republican Party decisively won every single statewide office in Georgia except for the Federal Senate race which narrowly went Democratic in 2022.
