Shi Yan is a farmer and founder of the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in China.
While studying at Beijing's Renmin University, Shi Yan was concerned about the widespread environmental damage being caused by chemical-reliant farming practices. In 2008, she traveled to the United States for six months as an intern at Minnesota's Earthrise Farm to see how Community Support Agriculture (CSA) is implemented in practice. [1]
CSA's consist of a community of individuals who pledge to support a farm, essentially making the farmland community-owned. Growers and consumers provide mutual support and share the risks and benefits of food production. Members typically receive a weekly delivery and collection of boxes of fruit and vegetables, dairy products or meat. CSA's began in the early 1960s in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan in response to concerns about food safety and the urbanization of agricultural land. [2] While food scarcity is no longer a prominent issue in China, many people worry about its safety. A nationwide scandal in 2008 involving toxic contamination of milk powder and tests that found traces of banned pesticides on supermarket vegetables has made many consumers more thoughtful about how their food is produced and where it comes from. Upon her return to China, Shi Yan founded Little Donkey Farm in 2011, the first CSA in China. The farm had four hundred families who paid an annual membership and another 260 families who rented small plots of land for their own gardens. [3] Shi Yan left Little Donkey Farm after a dispute over the structure of the CSA. [4]
In 2012, Shi Yan founded another CSA, Shared Harvest farm. [4] Shared Harvest is a completely organic farm and was one of the first in China to follow the CSA model. In 2017, Shared Harvest includes three farms plus connections with independent farmers and organic food suppliers. [4] While Shared Harvest does not have organic certification, they do not use any chemical fertilizer and pesticides. As of 2017, 800 families in Beijing are members, and Shared Harvest uses social media to communicate with subscribers about drop-off sites in various Beijing neighborhoods. [4]
A farmer is a person engaged in agriculture, raising living organisms for food or raw materials. The term usually applies to people who do some combination of raising field crops, orchards, vineyards, poultry, or other livestock. A farmer might own the farmland or might work as a laborer on land owned by others. In most developed economies, a "farmer" is usually a farm owner (landowner), while employees of the farm are known as farm workers. However, in other older definitions a farmer was a person who promotes or improves the growth of plants, land, or crops or raises animals by labor and attention.
Organic farming, also known as organic agriculture or ecological farming or biological farming, is an agricultural system that emphasizes the use of naturally occurring, non-synthetic inputs such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation, companion planting, and mixed cropping. Biological pest control methods such as the fostering of insect predators are also encouraged. Organic agriculture can be defined as "an integrated farming system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity while, with rare exceptions, prohibiting synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and growth hormones". It originated early in the 20th century in reaction to rapidly changing farming practices. Certified organic agriculture today accounts for 70 million hectares globally, with over half of that total in Australia.
Sustainable agriculture is farming in sustainable ways meeting society's present food and textile needs, without compromising the ability for current or future generations to meet their needs. It can be based on an understanding of ecosystem services. There are many methods to increase the sustainability of agriculture. When developing agriculture within sustainable food systems, it is important to develop flexible business processes and farming practices. Agriculture has an enormous environmental footprint, playing a significant role in causing climate change, water scarcity, water pollution, land degradation, deforestation and other processes; it is simultaneously causing environmental changes and being impacted by these changes. Sustainable agriculture consists of environment friendly methods of farming that allow the production of crops or livestock without causing damage to human or natural systems. It involves preventing adverse effects on soil, water, biodiversity, and surrounding or downstream resources, as well as to those working or living on the farm or in neighboring areas. Elements of sustainable agriculture can include permaculture, agroforestry, mixed farming, multiple cropping, and crop rotation.
Local food is food that is produced within a short distance of where it is consumed, often accompanied by a social structure and supply chain different from the large-scale supermarket system.
Community-supported agriculture or cropsharing is a system that connects producers and consumers within the food system closer by allowing the consumer to subscribe to the harvest of a certain farm or group of farms. It is an alternative socioeconomic model of agriculture and food distribution that allows the producer and consumer to share the risks of farming. The model is a subcategory of civic agriculture that has an overarching goal of strengthening a sense of community through local markets.

Farmers' markets may be indoors or outdoors and typically consist of booths, tables or stands where farmers sell their produce, live animals and plants, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages. A food system includes all processes and infrastructure involved in feeding a population: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consumption, distribution, and disposal of food and food-related items.
