Shirley Gibson (died October 16,2023) was a public official and politician in Florida. [1] She was the first mayor of Miami Gardens,a majority African American city outside Miami. [2] She served as mayor of Miami Gardens from 2003 to 2012. [3]
She was born in Camilla,Georgia,and moved with her family to Key West as a child. The oldest of six children,she became a police officer. [4] She graduated from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry. She worked as a police officer for several years, [5] before leading efforts for Miami Gardens to be incorporated as a city. [6] Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13,2003,after which Gibson served as mayor. [7] She hosted a radio talk show in Miami. [5]
She married Robert Wimberly Jr. and had a daughter. [4]

On December 5,2019,a police pursuit of jewelry store robbers in Miramar,Florida,United States,culminated in a shootout,killing the perpetrators,the kidnapped driver of a UPS multi-stop truck,and a bystander. The crime scene was described as "very complicated" by the FBI special agent in charge. The president of Miami-Dade's police union claimed that at least eleven officers opened fire on the UPS truck in response to the robbers' firing first.
The 1970 Newark mayoral election was held on June 16,1970. Incumbent mayor Hugh Addonizio ran for a third term in office but was defeated by civil engineer Kenneth A. Gibson. Gibson became the first black man elected mayor of a major city in the Northeastern United States or Eastern Seaboard.
