Shirley Machaba is a South African chartered accountant. She is the first black woman to be appointed Chief Executive Officer for PwC Southern Africa, an accounting firm in South Africa. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Early years

Machaba was born in Jabavu in Soweto, where she lived with her grandmother and siblings. [6]

Education

She had her primary education and secondary education at Jabavu Primary School and Vhulaudzi Secondary School in Tshitavha in Venda respectively. She later furthered at the University of Venda, where she graduated with a bachelor of commerce degree in accounting. [6] She holds a postgraduate diploma in auditing & accounting from the University of South Africa. She holds two additional diplomas in Integrated Reporting from the University of Pretoria and Corporate Governance from Duke University. [7]

Career

After acquiring her degree, she worked part time as a junior internal auditor at the Auditor-General’s office and a lecturer at the University of Venda. In May 2019, she was appointed Chief Executive Officer for PwC Southern Africa, making her the first black African woman to occupy such position. [7] [4] [8] [9] [10]

Prior to that, spent nearly a decade working at the Auditor-General's office occupying a variety of positions, including Assistant Auditor, Senior Auditor, Accountant and Performance Audit Manager. She also worked at the Department of Justice in South Africa for nearly half a decade. There, she became the Head of the Internal Auditing unit by the time she left the department in 2004. In 2005 she joined PwC. [7] [6]

Machaba was president of the Institute of Internal Auditors of South Africa for 2011 - 2014, [11] and subsequently the Chairman of the Institute Relations Committee of the Institute of Internal Auditors. [12]

The scandal was brought to light in 2009 when chairman Byrraju Ramalinga Raju confessed that the company's accounts had been falsified.

She is currently the Executive Vice President: Energy Business of Sasol, since 1 September 2020.

Shudufhadzo Musida is a South African model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss South Africa 2020. She is the second title holder from the province of Limpopo - the first being Bokang Montjane. She is the first title holder whose first language is Venda, and was selected to represent South Africa in Miss World 2022. Musida is the first bald woman to win Miss South Africa. She is a dedicated advocate and spokeswoman for mental health awareness and empowering women and children.

Anne Muraya is a Kenyan accountant, businesswoman, and corporate executive who was appointed as the chief executive officer of Deloitte East Africa, effective 1 June 2022. Up until then, she served as the Africa Managing Partner for Responsible Business and Public Policy at Deloitte. She concurrently worked as the audit leader for East Africa. In her new position, Muraya oversees the company's business in eight countries, namely: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. She is the first female executive to serve in that position, in the history of the firm.
