Dr. Shivpujan Rai was an Indian independence activist. During the 1942 Quit India Movement, under Rai's leadership a group of independence fighters hoisted the tricolor flag of India at Mohammadabad Tehsil. In doing so Shivpujan Rai, Rishishewar Rai, Vans Narayan Rai, Ram Badan Upadhyay, Raj Narayan Rai, Narayan Rai, Vashishtha Narain Rai and Bans Narain Rai sacrificed their life for India's independence on 18 August 1942. All of them are known as Ashta Shaheed (Eight Martyrs) of Sherpur. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Biography

Early life

Dr. Shivpujan Rai was born in a Bhumihar family in the year of 1913 in Sherpur village of Ghazipur district. [9]

Life as independence activist

Shivpujan Rai was elected as General Secretary of District Congress Committee in 1942. [10]

Martyrdom at Mohammadabad

During Quit India movement Dr. Shivpujan Rai led a group of young independence activists to tehsil head quarter at Mohammadabad and tried to hoist tricolour at tehsil building. He was warned by armed British officers but Shivpujan Rai moved forward with tricolour in hand. Tehsildar fired on him with his service revolver but the young freedom fighter didn't stop. After receiving five bullets in the chest he fell down and sacrificed his life in a very young age of 29 years. [11]

Rambriksh Benipuri India Writer

Ramavriksha Benipuri was a freedom fighter, Socialist Leader, editor and Hindi writer. He was born in a small village named Benipur in Muzaffarpur district in a Bhumihar Brahmin family in the Indian state of Bihar. He had spent nine years in prison for fighting for India's independence. He was the founder of Bihar Socialist Party in 1931 and Congress Socialist Party in 1934. He served as the president of Patna District Congress Committee of Indian National Congress from 1935 to 1937 during the 1937 Indian provincial elections. He was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) from Katra North in 1957. In 1958, he was elected as the Syndicate Member of Bihar University, Muzaffarpur.

Shaheed Smarak Patna

The Martyrs' Memorial, also known as Shaheed Smarak, is a life-size statue of seven young men who sacrificed their lives in the Quit India movement, to hoist the national flag on the (now) Secretariat building. The foundation stone of Martyr's Memorial was laid on 15 August 1947, by the governor of Bihar, Mr. Jairam Das Daulatram in presence of Premier of Bihar "Bihar Keshri" Dr. Srikrishna Sinha and his deputy Mr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha. The sculptor Devi Prasad Roychoudhury built the bronze statue of the seven students with the national flag. These statues were cast in Italy and later placed here.
