Plot
Shelly Saltemeir is an overachieving senior student in her last year of high school in a small Texas town. She works part-time to provide for her family, which consists of her 14-year-old sister Tanya and her deadbeat stepmother, Ruby. She occasionally visits her mother's grave and hangs out with her best friend Raymond. Unknown to her family and friends, Shelly is plagued with nightmares of the incestuous sexual abuse she received from her father Carl, who groomed her into having sex with him since she was a child. Shelly was only freed from her abuse after Carl fled to Mexico to avoid the authorities over a busted drug deal. As a result of her ordeal, Shelly is protective over Tanya, who had begun exploring her sexuality.
One day, Shelly returns home to find Carl, who had come home as a surprise after his charges were dropped and cleared by charming his way through the authorities. While Ruby and Tanya are overjoyed at his return, Shelly feigns happiness while secretly dreading his presence, especially when it is clear he is still sexually attracted to her now she has grown up. Carl's actions at their home make Shelly uncomfortable, such as loudly having sex with Ruby and walking into her room naked, and he begins to notice his daughter's discomfort. Shelly's paranoia around her father causes her nightmares to aggravate and her to feel physically sick.
Shelly manages to become valedictorian and is gifted a car by her father; she takes it on a ride with Tanya and she proposes that they escape town together but backs out when she is unable to convince Tanya that she is unsafe around Carl. She fends off another sexual advance by her father; due to believing Carl would sway the police to his side if she reports him, she comes up with a plan to kill him instead. Having overheard him planning another drug deal, Shelly proposes to Raymond that he pose as Carl's drug dealer, lure him to a remote site, and kill him there before staging it as a drug deal gone wrong. Raymond agrees to the plan after Shelly confesses her abuse. Shelly realizes Carl has begun grooming Tanya, and, after stopping Carl from potentially harming her, is beaten by her father.
After Raymond manages to convince Carl's contact about being Carl's dealer, Shelly comes home to see Carl had taken Tanya out to town and gotten her drunk. Knowing what he could do to her sister, she diverts Carl's attention to her by suggestively touching him; he later goes to her room and she reluctantly allows her father to have sex with her. As Shelly begins retrieving items to stage her father's murder, Carl becomes suspicious and begins following her, and later violently confronts his daughter about what she is doing. Shelly manages to lie to Carl before she and Raymond set the final stages for their plan.
Shelly and Raymond arrive at the site of the deal, an abandoned cabin, where they prepare for Carl's arrival. Shelley fires at a figure which turns out to be Tanya, who Carl brought along with her, possibly to rape her. After patching up the seriously injured Tanya, Shelley, Raymond, and Carl fight around the cabin. Carl manages to gain the upper hand and holds Raymond and Shelley at gunpoint before he is finally gunned down by Tanya, who finally sees her father's abusive ways. Shelley tries to plant the evidence according to her plan but could not push through due to her trauma. Raymond tells her that they will instead tell the police the truth before they leave to get medical help for Tanya.

Shelly works as a waitress at the Double R Diner and has an affair with Bobby Briggs. In Twin Peaks: The Return, it is revealed that Shelly married Bobby and still works at the Double R Diner. Her main storyline focuses on her trying to save their troubled daughter, Becky Burnett, from her own marriage to an abusive drug addict.
Ruby Allen is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Louisa Lytton from 18 March 2005 to 23 November 2006, and then again from 18 September 2018 to 17 September 2021. The character and casting were announced in February 2005, and Ruby was introduced in March that year by producer Kathleen Hutchison. She was featured in storylines surrounding her gangland father Johnny Allen, with whom she shared a problematic relationship with due to his criminal lifestyle. Other storylines included a close friendship with Stacey Slater, and an engagement to Stacey's brother Sean - which affected their friendship. In July 2006, Lytton was axed from the show due to limited possibilities for the character following the death of her on-screen father, and Ruby departed on 23 November 2006. In July 2018, it was confirmed Lytton would return after a twelve-year absence. Ruby returned on 18 September 2018 and departed once again on 17 September 2021.

Chelsea Fox is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Tiana Benjamin from 2006 to 2010, and then Zaraah Abrahams from 2020 onwards. Max Branning is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Jake Wood. He made his first appearance on 27 June 2006. Wood took a four-month break from the show in 2011 and the character was absent between August and November 2011. Wood took a year long break from the show in 2015, with Max departing on 1 October. He returned on 24 December 2016. Wood took another short break from the show in 2018; Max departed on 16 February and returned on 23 April. It was announced in 2018 that Max would be taking a break from the soap in early 2019. He left on 14 February 2019 and returned on 7 May 2019. Max served as the show's main antagonist of 2017 following his release from prison and planning revenge on all his family, friends and neighbours. On 16 September 2020, it was announced that Wood would be departing from the role of Max after more than 14 years. Wood's final scenes aired on 19 February 2021.
Alan Turner is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Emmerdale, played by Richard Thorp. He debuted on-screen on 23 March 1982. Thorp died on 22 May 2013 and the last scenes that Thorp filmed as Alan were aired on 4 June 2013 in a special hour-long episode dedicated to him. It was announced on 12 September 2013 that Alan would be killed off-screen in late October with his daughter Steph returning for his funeral. Alan died in his sleep on 24 October 2013.

Whitney Dean is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Shona McGarty. The character is the ward of long-running character Bianca Jackson and was introduced on 1 April 2008 when Palmer returned to the series after a nine-year absence. Whitney is described by executive producer Diederick Santer as both an equal to, and younger version of Bianca, and is the oldest of Bianca's four children. Whitney was absent from the soap across four weeks in 2012 when McGarty was suspended for repeated lateness. McGarty took a short break in 2017 and Whitney departed on 29 May and returned on 31 July of that year. On 1 June 2018, McGarty filmed her 1,000th episode as Whitney. On 29 July 2023, it was announced that McGarty had resigned from her role after fifteen years, and Whitney would be leaving the soap in early 2024.
Tony King is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Chris Coghill. He was the partner of established character Bianca Jackson, and a father-figure to her four children. Tony sexually abused Bianca's stepdaughter, Whitney Dean, and began grooming her school-friend Lauren Branning, before his predatory nature was uncovered and he was arrested for his crimes. Tony appeared between 12 September and 12 December 2008 and returned in December 2009 to stand trial.
The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal consists of the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England from the late 1980s until present and the failure of local authorities to act on reports of the abuse throughout most of that period. Researcher Angie Heal, who was hired by local officials and warned them about child exploitation occurring between 2002 and 2007, has since described it as the "biggest child protection scandal in UK history". Evidence of the abuse was first noted in the early 1990s, when care home managers investigated reports that children in their care were being picked up by taxi drivers. From at least 2001, multiple reports passed names of alleged perpetrators, several from one family, to the police and Rotherham Council. The first group conviction took place in 2010, when five British-Pakistani men were convicted of sexual offences against girls aged 12–16. From January 2011 Andrew Norfolk of The Times pressed the issue, reporting in 2012 that the abuse in the town was widespread and that the police and council had known about it for over ten years.

The Keighley child sex abuse ring was a group of twelve men who committed serious sexual offences against two under-aged girls in the English town of Keighley and city of Bradford, West Yorkshire. In December 2015, they were found guilty of rape and other forms of sexual abuse by a unanimous jury verdict at Bradford Crown Court. They were sentenced in February 2016 to a total of 130 years in jail. The main victim, who had been targeted by ten of the men, was aged between 13 and 14 at the time of the attacks between 2011 and 2012.
