The Silwerskerm Film Festival (Afrikaans : Silwerskerm FilmFees), usually called the Silwerskerm Fees, is a film festival held annually in Camps Bay, South Africa. [1] The festival has been held every August since 2010 and is one of the only Afrikaans film festivals in the world.

Contents

With around 5000 tickets sold and 6500 admissions each year, it is considered as a niche Afrikaans film festival. Up to 30 films are shown in several sections across cinematic genres. Around six films compete for the festival's top feature length awards, and around fifteen short films are in competition.

<i>7de Laan</i> South African soapie

7de Laan was a South African Afrikaans soap opera created by Danie Odendaal and produced by Danie Odendaal Productions. The series focuses on the lives of residents in and around the community of 7de Laan, in the suburb of Hillside. The programme's dialogue is primarily in Afrikaans and was subtitled in English with some English and Zulu dialogue in between. The show was cancelled in July 2023 and its final episode aired on 26 December 2023.

Charles J. Fourie is a South African writer and director working in television, film and theatre. Fourie staged his first play as a drama student at the Windybrow Theatre in 1985. Album of the Year is considered to be one of the top five accolades of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), an annual award ceremony coordinated by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA). The recording artist(s) who released the winning album are given a statuette called a SAMA. To be eligible for nomination, an album must have been released by a South African artist in the calendar year before the year of the ceremony. The ceremony is held in April or May, and features live performances by some of the nominees. The event is broadcast on SABC1.

Poppie Nongena is a 2019 South African biographical drama film written and directed by award-winning director Christiaan Olwagen. The film is based on a biographical novel Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena by Elsa Joubert which is also considered as one of the finest African novels of the twentieth century. The film stars Clementine Mosimane playing the title role, Anna-Mart van der Merwe and Chris Gxalaba in the lead roles. The film was released on 31 January 2020 and received positive reviews from the critics. It won several awards and nominations at a few film festivals. The film won 12 awards in the 2019 Silwerskerm Film Festival including the Best Film Accolade. The record haul of 12 awards is regarded as the highest tally ever recorded for a single film at an Afrikaans film festival.

Jill Levenberg is a South African actress. In 2018, she starred in Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story as the title character, a role that earned her a nomination and two awards including a South African Film and Television Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film.
