Simon Corney

Simon Corney is a businessman and the former chairman, director and former owner of English football club Oldham Athletic.

Working in the field of telecommunications in New York City, Corney bought Oldham Athletic in 2004 with colleagues Danny Gazal and Simon Blitz. [1] The football club had been close to liquidation before an investment of funds in 2004. [2] Gazal and Blitz ceased any involvement with the club in 2010. [3]

In 2014, Corney negotiated a sponsorship deal for Oldham's ground, Boundary Park, with sporting retail group SportsDirect.com which resulted in a ground name change to the SportsDirect.com Park. [4]

In 2015, Corney was in controversial discussions to sign footballer and wrongly convicted rapist Ched Evans for Oldham Athletic. Evans at the time was in prison for the offence but the conviction was later quashed in the Court of Appeal. [5]

Simon Blitz is an English businessman who is the former chairman of Oldham Athletic of Football League One. He is one of three businessmen who purchased Oldham in 2003, along with Simon Corney and Danny Gazal. On 7 July 2010, he stepped down as chairman of Oldham, along with Gazal, citing personal and economic reasons for his departure. Corney took over as chairman following his resignation. Blitz is quoted in a BBC Sport article about the matter:

"I don't feel I'm able to give the supporters the contribution they are looking for in the future Last season I invested a further substantial amount of money into the club and with reduced income from season ticket sales this summer, the demands on me were becoming too great. I have met lots of nice people and enjoyed my time, but have found it a constant battle and uphill struggle in more recent times."

OASF is a supporters' trust, for the English football club, Oldham Athletic based in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

Sheffield United Football Club participated in League One, the third level of English football for the first time in 23 years having been relegated from the Championship at the end of the previous season. It was also their first appearance in both the Football League Trophy and the first round proper of the FA Cup for a similar length of time, as well as being the first season under new manager Danny Wilson. United began the season well, recording consistently sound results in Football League One and nearing the position required for an immediate return to the Championship. By the turn of the year, the squad was well positioned for promotion.
