Simpson Medal

The Simpson Medal is an individual prize awarded for Australian rules football in Western Australia. The medal has been donated by Dr Fred Simpson and family since 1945.

After 1994, the interstate Simpson Medal was strictly awarded for WAFL representative matches, and not for the AFL representative State of Origin matches which were played in the late 1990s; a separate medal - the Graham Moss Medal - was awarded to Western Australia's best player in those matches.

Representative matches in Australian rules football are matches between representative teams played under the Australian rules, most notably of the colonies and later Australian states and territories that have been held since 1879. For most of the 20th century, the absence of a national club competition in Australia and international matches meant that intercolonial and later interstate matches were regarded with great importance.

John Herbert Todd was an Australian rules footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). He also coached with success at East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Swan Districts, West Coast, and Western Australia. The only coach that comes close to John Todd in games coached is Jock McHale, who coached Collingwood. Mick Malthouse later broke McHale’s coaching record for games coached, but McHale still has won the most VFL/AFL premierships (8). Malthouse won 3 Premierships. A State Memorial service was held on 21 August 2024 for John Todd.

Ryan Edwin Turnbull is a former Australian rules footballer who represented the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). John David McIntosh was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the St Kilda Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Beverley, Western Australia, McIntosh also played 19 interstate matches, 18 for Western Australia and one for Victoria. He retired after four games of the 1972 VFL season due to a knee injury originally sustained in the 1971 VFL second semi-final.

Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Bolton has won two Sandover Medals, four Simpson medals and three EB Cook medals whilst being runner up on three occasions also!
