Simshar is a 2014 Maltese drama film directed by Rebecca Cremona. [1] It was selected as the Maltese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. [2] [3] It was the first time that Malta submitted a film for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. [4] The film tells the story of the Simshar incident. [5]
During 2015 and 2016, Simshar entered the global festival circuit, collecting several awards including the Special Achievement Award [6] at the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg and Best International Feature at Edmonton International Film Festival. In 2015 Gravitas Ventures (US) obtained the worldwide distribution rights [7] for the film including for VOD platforms.
Difret is a 2014 Ethiopian drama film written and directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari. The film had its premiere in-competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival where it won the World Cinematic Dramatic Audience Award. Angelina Jolie served as the executive producer of the film.
Rebecca Cremona is a Maltese film director. She is the director and co-writer of Simshar, the first Maltese film to be submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The film industry of Malta consists primarily of location shooting for larger foreign productions. The Maltese landscape has portrayed several different regions of the world, and the Maltese government provides incentives for foreign productions to operate in Malta. The prevalence of location shooting in the country has created a large film tourism industry. Malta has also had a limited number of local productions of Maltese films.
