Sing Street is a musical with music and lyrics by Gary Clark and John Carney and a book by Enda Walsh. The musical is based on Carney's 2016 film of the same name. The stage adaptation was originally presented at New York Theatre Workshop. Directed by Rebecca Taichman and produced by Barbara Broccoli, Brian Carmody, Patrick Milling-Smith, Michael Wilson, Orin Wolf, and Frederick Zollo, the musical was initially set to premiere on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre in previews on March 26, 2020 and officially on April 19 with the same cast, but was ultimately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] [2] Nevertheless, a cast recording featuring the original Broadway cast was released on April 22, 2020. [3] The show was presented by the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston in the fall of 2022, with plans to move to Broadway. [4]

Productions

Off-Broadway (2019)

Sing Street, like Carney's film Once , was adapted for the stage as a musical, also called Sing Street. The screenplay was adapted by Enda Walsh (who also wrote the book for the musical Once ) and the production was directed by Rebecca Taichman. The show opened at New York Theatre Workshop on December 16, 2019 after extensive workshops and three weeks of preview performances. The production closed on January 26, 2020, with initial plans to transfer to the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway with the cast intact. [5] [6] However, the production was postponed due to the shutdown of Broadway theaters. [1]

Broadway (2020) (postponed due to COVID-19)

The Broadway Cast was announced and started rehearsals at New 42 Studios in February 2020. On the date that the cast moved into the Lyceum Theatre (March 12, 2020), the producers announced that a 30 day pause was occurring, as was recommended by the Broadway League. The Broadway Cast reunited for a fundraising concert called "Sing Street: Grounded", which played live on April 30, 2020 and raised $310,924 for BCEFA. [7] The members of the Broadway Cast are part of a very exclusive club of shows for which an original Broadway cast album was made and released and yet the show did not officially open.

Boston (2022)

A second production ran at Boston's Calderwood Pavilion, presented by The Huntington Theatre in association with Sing Street Broadway LLC. The run, which began on August 26 and concluded on October 9, 2022, once again has direction by Rebecca Taichman, choreography by Sonya Tayeh, and set design by Bob Crowley. Costume design was by Crowley and Lisa Zinni, lighting design was by Natasha Katz, sound design was by Peter Hylenski, video design were by Luke Halls and Brad Peterson, Wigs/Hair and Makeup are by Tommy Kurzman. <i>Once</i> (musical) 2011 musical

Once is a musical based on the 2007 film of the same name by John Carney. Like the film, music and lyrics were by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, including the Academy Award-winning "Falling Slowly". The book for the musical was written by Enda Walsh. The musical premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2011, before transferring to Broadway in 2012. The production received eleven 2012 Tony Award nominations, and won eight including Best Musical, Best Actor and Best Book. The musical also won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It has since spawned a London production, with a North American Tour which started on 1 October 2013. In the musical, the cast also serves as the orchestra. A minimalist set is used, including a bar in center stage with chairs lining stage left and right. Exiting cast members simply step to the side of the stage and sit down. They serve as the orchestra from these chairs. The bar is used before the show and at intermission as a working bar for theater patrons.
