Skating's Next Star is a reality television show that began airing on the WE tv on April 26, 2006. [1]
Twelve Professional Skaters competed for the first place prize $25,000, a feature article in International Figure Skating Magazine and a one year contract management contract with Major League Figure Skating. The show gained notoriety on the Today (NBC program) show which featured Natalia Kanounnikova setting the Guinness World Records for being the fastest spinner on ice. She set the record in episode 2. The Series was created by CEO of Major League Figure Skating and Former United States Figure Skating Judge, Jon Rubin. [2] [3]
The show is hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist, Kristi Yamaguchi. [4] The Judges are Olympic Silver Medalist Elvis Stojko, Double Olympic Gold Medalist Oksana Grishuk and World Bronze Medalist, Rudy Galindo. [5]

| This first episode introduces the skaters. There's already a twist: the skaters will be surprised that two of them are going to be cut from the competition immediately. Each will have just 60 seconds on the ice to show their stuff in front of the judges. They'll have to show spins, footwork and jumps. In 60 seconds. No rehearsal, no practice, no second chances. Each skater skates, the judges give their critique after each skate, and at the end of the show, two skaters will be sent packing. | |||

| This episode has the skaters compete for fastest spin. We'll be using a custom rotational tachometer that's never been used before to precisely measure the speed of an ice skater's spin. There is a chance that one of them will earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. This episode also has the skaters performing on teams in an ensemble number—swing chain, chorus line, synchronized skating, etc. The five men will be on one team and the five women on the other team. They'll have to skate together as a team, while still being in competition with one another. Each skater gets a highlighted moment, too. The judges will be briefed on how cooperative the skaters were in practice. One man and one woman will be eliminated from the competition after the team skate. | |||

| The skaters won't believe this challenge:they'll be judged on one jump—the nearly impossible reverse axle. Lots of falling and very clumsy landings. We expect that one or two skaters will be able to pull it off. The skaters who do the best will earn an advantage going into this next competition... The second big challenge is all about spins. Each skater's routine will show off their best,most creative,wild,contorted,elegant spin. One man and one woman will be eliminated after the spin routines. | |||

| In this episode,the skaters will be judged on how they skate in pairs,which most are just not trained to do. They will have rehearsal time the night before. The best pair will earn an advantage going into the second challenge... Each skater will perform an especially showy,dance number —Broadway,musicals,chorus lines,etc. One man and one woman will be eliminated after the showtime number. | |||

| Lots of bravura in this episode,with skaters showing off their most entertaining,fancy footwork. The best man and woman will earn an advantage going into the next challenge. The two remaining competitors will skate three very showy,fast-paced,competitive challenges to determine the winner. It will feel a little like "anything you can do I can do better." By now,viewers will be strongly rooting for one or the other. All eliminated skaters return to rally round their former rivals. One skater,either the male or the female,will be named Skating's Next Star. Then,there will be a big all-skate finale with special effects. Kristen Treni became Skating's Next Star. | |||
In a negative review,Jessica Shaw of Entertainment Weekly wrote,"How does one butcher a reality show about figure skating? Start by assembling a lifeless host (Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi),a petty panel of judges (including Rudy Galindo,who pathetically tries to be the Simon of the bunch but instead offers obnoxious personal criticism for no reason),a lame prize ($25,000?),and a group of contestants with lackluster moves and bland backstories." Kristine Tsuya Yamaguchi is an American former competitive figure skater,author and philanthropist. A former competitor in women's singles,Yamaguchi is the 1992 Olympic champion,a two-time World champion,and the 1992 U.S. champion. In 1992,she became the first Asian American to win a gold medal in a Winter Olympic competition. As a pairs skater with Rudy Galindo,she is the 1988 World Junior champion and a two-time national champion.
Elvis Stojko,is a Canadian figure skater. He was a three-time World champion,two-time Olympic silver medallist,and seven-time Canadian champion.
Alexandra Pauline "Sasha" Cohen is a retired American figure skater. She is the 2006 Olympic silver medalist,a three-time World Championship medalist,the 2003 Grand Prix Final Champion,and the 2006 U.S. Champion. She is known for her artistry,flexibility and body lines,and musical interpretation. As of 2022,Cohen is the most recent American woman to medal individually in figure skating at the Olympics.
Val Joe "Rudy" Galindo is an American former competitive figure skater who competed in both single skating and pair skating. As a single skater,he is the 1996 U.S. national champion,1987 World Junior Champion,and 1996 World Bronze medalist. As a pairs skater,he competed with Kristi Yamaguchi and was the 1988 World Junior Champion and the 1989 and 1990 U.S. National Champion. He is the first openly gay skating champion in the United States,though US,World and Olympic champion Brian Boitano came out long after his career was over.
Stars on Ice is a touring figure skating show produced by IMG. It was co-founded in 1986 by Bob Kain,IMG executive,and Scott Hamilton,the 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in men's figure skating. The production is a theatrical show featuring a small cast of elite skaters who perform together in ensemble as well as solo numbers. Hamilton retired from regular touring in 2001.
Go Figure is a 2005 Disney Channel Original Movie,starring Jordan Hinson. Walt Disney Records released the Go Figure soundtrack on June 7,featuring the title track by Everlife alongside a music video.
Richard Eichhorn,professionally known as Richie Rich,is an American fashion designer,television personality,figure skater,singer,actor and author. During the 1990s,he was part of the original group of New York City dance club personalities named Club Kids.
Gennadi Mikhailovich Karponosov is an ice dancing coach and a former competitive ice dancer for the Soviet Union. With Natalia Linichuk,he is the 1980 Olympic champion and a two-time World champion.
Oksana (Pasha) Vladimirovna Grishuk is a Russian former competitive ice dancer. She is best known for her partnership with Evgeni Platov from 1989 to 1998. With Platov,she is a two-time Olympic champion,four-time World champion (1994–1997),and three-time European champion (1996–1998). With previous partner Alexandr Chichkov,she is the 1988 World Junior champion.
John Allen Wisden Nicks is a British figure skating coach and former pair skater. With his sister,Jennifer Nicks,he is the 1953 World champion. As a coach,his skating pupils have included Peggy Fleming,pairs team Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner,Kristi Yamaguchi,Paul Wylie,Sasha Cohen,Rory Flack and Ashley Wagner.

Natalia Filimonovna Bestemianova or Bestemyanova is a Soviet and Russian former competitive ice dancer who competed for the Soviet Union. With her partner Andrei Bukin,she is the 1988 Olympic Champion,1984 Olympic silver medalist,four-time World champion,three-time World silver medalist,and five-time European champion.
Sandra Marie Bezic is a Canadian pair skater,figure skating choreographer,producer,and television commentator. With her brother Val Bezic,she won the Canadian Figure Skating Championships from 1970 to 1974 and placed ninth at the 1972 Winter Olympics. Skate Canada announced on July 14,2010,that she will be inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame in the professional category
Mabel Fairbanks was an American figure skater and coach. As an African American and Native American woman she paved the way for other minorities to compete in the sport of figure skating such as Tai Babilonia,Debi Thomas,and Naomi Lang. She was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame,as the first person of African American and Native American descent,and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
Igor Anatolyevich Bobrin is a Russian former competitive figure skater who represented the Soviet Union. He is the 1981 European champion,the 1981 World bronze medalist,and a four-time Soviet national champion. Bobrin placed 6th at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
Dmitri Kazarlyga is a former ice dancer who competed internationally for Kazakhstan. With partner Elizaveta Stekolnikova,he is the 1994 Skate America bronze medalist,1995 Winter Universiade bronze medalist,and 1996 Asian Winter Games champion. They placed 18th at the 1994 Winter Olympics and 22nd at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Chen Lu is a Chinese former figure skater. She is the 1994 and 1998 Olympic bronze medalist and the 1995 World Champion. Chen won the first ever Olympic medal in figure skating for China.
