Slavutych Smolensk is an ice hockey team in Smolensk, Russia. The club was founded in 2010, and plays in the Belarusian Extraleague.
Smolensk is a city and the administrative center of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Dnieper River, 360 kilometers (220 mi) west-southwest of Moscow. First mentioned in 863, it is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It has a population of 316,570 (2021 Census).
Smolensk Oblast, informally also called Smolenshchina (Смоленщина), is a federal subject of Russia. Its administrative centre is the city of Smolensk. As of the 2021 Census, its population was 888,421.
The Battle of Smolensk was the first major battle of the French invasion of Russia. It took place on 16–18 August 1812 and involved about 45,000 men of the Grande Armée under Emperor Napoleon I against about 30,000 Russian troops under General Barclay de Tolly. Napoleon occupied Smolensk by driving out Prince Pyotr Bagration's Second Army. The French artillery bombardment burned the city to the ground. Of 2,250 buildings, 84% were destroyed with only 350 surviving intact. Of the city's 15,000 inhabitants, about 1,000 were left at the end of the battle inside the smoking ruins. With over 15,000 casualties, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the invasion.

The first Battle of Smolensk was a battle during the second phase of Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, in World War II. It was fought around the city of Smolensk between 10 July and 10 September 1941, about 400 km (250 mi) west of Moscow. The Ostheer had advanced 500 km (310 mi) into the USSR in the 18 days after the invasion on 22 June 1941.

The second Smolensk operation was a Soviet strategic offensive operation conducted by the Red Army as part of the Summer-Autumn Campaign of 1943. Staged almost simultaneously with the Lower Dnieper Offensive, the offensive lasted two months and was led by General Andrei Yeremenko, commanding the Kalinin Front, and Vasily Sokolovsky, commanding the Western Front. Its goal was to clear the German presence from the Smolensk and Bryansk regions. Smolensk had been under German occupation since the first Battle of Smolensk in 1941.
Smolensk South Airport is the former aerodrome of Smolensk in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located 2 km south of the city. It was a civilian airfield with a small tarmac runway, until it stopped operating commercially in the early 2000s. There are many stored An-2s and a disused DOSAAF area. Once the main airports of the city of Smolensk, it remains active only for sporting use.
Smolensk North Airport is a decommissioned military airbase in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located 4 km north of the city of Smolensk. It is now used as Smolensk's sole airport for civil and military flights. It has a remote revetment area with 8 pads and a Yakovlev factory at the southeast side of the airfield, the Smolensk Aviation Plant.
The siege of Smolensk lasted almost a year between 1632 and 1633, when the Muscovite army besieged the Polish–Lithuanian city of Smolensk during the war named after that siege. Russian forces of over 25,000 under Mikhail Borisovich Shein began the siege of Smolensk on 28 October. The Polish garrison under Samuel Drucki-Sokoliński numbered about 3,000. The fortress held out for nearly a year, and in 1633 the newly-elected Polish king Władysław IV organised a relief force. In a series of fierce engagements, Commonwealth forces gradually overran the Russian field fortifications, and by 4 October the siege had broken. Shein had become besieged in his camp, and began surrender negotiations in January 1634, capitulating around 1 March.
The Principality of Smolensk was a Kievan Rus' lordship from the 11th to the 16th century. Until 1127, when it passed to Rostislav Mstislavich, the principality was part of the land of Kiev. The principality gradually came under Lithuanian influence and was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1404. The principality was reorganized into the Smolensk Voivodeship in 1508. The Principality of Moscow controlled the city from 1514 to 1611, then it was recaptured by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Tsardom of Russia recaptured the city in 1654.
FC Iskra Smolensk was a Russian football team from Smolensk. It played professionally in 1937 and 1960 to 1994. In 1995 it merged with FC Kristall Smolensk. They played on the second-highest level in the Soviet First League in 1960–1962 and in 1980–1986. Their best result there was 7th place in 1981.
FC Kristall Smolensk was a Russian football team from Smolensk. It played professionally from 1993 to 2003. They played on the second-highest level in the Russian First Division from 1997 to 2003, where their best result was 4th place in 1998. In 2004 a new club was founded in Smolensk, called FC Smolensk.
On 10 April 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft operating Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people on board. Among the victims were the president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and his wife, Maria; the former president of Poland-in-exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski; the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers; the president of the National Bank of Poland; Polish government officials; 18 members of the Polish parliament; senior members of the Polish clergy; and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre. The group was arriving from Warsaw to attend an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the massacre, which took place not far from Smolensk.
Monastyrshchinsky District is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the twenty-five in Smolensk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the west of the oblast and borders with Smolensky District in the north, Pochinkovsky District in the east, Khislavichsky District in the south, Mstsislaw District of Mogilev Region of Belarus in the west, and with Krasninsky District in the northwest. The area of the district is 1,513.75 square kilometers (584.46 sq mi). Its administrative center is the urban locality of Monastyrshchina. Population: 10,788 ; 13,876 (2002 Census); 17,559 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Monastyrshchino accounts for 37.7% of the district's total population.
Smolensk Strait is the strait in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica separating Deception Island from Rozhen Peninsula on Livingston Island, 18.4 km wide between Macaroni Point to the southwest and Barnard Point to the northeast.
FC Dnepr Smolensk is an association football club from Smolensk, Russia, founded in 2004 and dissolved in 2019. Another Smolensk team, FC Kristall Smolensk, was dissolved in early 2004. It played in the Russian Professional Football League from 2005 to 2007 and then again from 2009 to 2019.
The Ruthenian Catholic Archeparchy of Smolensk was an archeparchy of the Metropolis of Kiev, Galicia and all Ruthenia in the Ruthenian Uniate Church from 1625 to 1778. It was situated in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in what is today the Smolensk Oblast of the Russian Federation. It used the Byzantine Rite in its services. It was also known as the Ruthenian Catholic Archdiocese of Smolensk or Smoleńsk of the Ruthenians.
