The song's title is based on the common English idiom "slipping through your fingers," meaning to pass without being taken advantage of. [3] This phrase is used repeatedly to emphasize the message of unrequited love.

Background

Meghan Trainor announced The Timeless Tour in March 2024, featuring Paul Russell as opening act. [4] Russell shared "slippin'" with Trainor, with it being released later that year prior to their tour. [1] [5]

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Russell describes how he and one of the song's producers used artificial intelligence to create a "virtual sample," making a sample of Russell's voice sound feminine. This AI-generated sample was then used in the song. [6]
