Slumberland Furniture, Inc. is a privately held, family-owned furniture retailer [1] headquartered in Oakdale, Minnesota. Founded in 1967 by Ken Larson [2] , the company began as one of the first specialty "sleep stores" in the United States [3] , focused on mattresses and La-Z-Boy recliners. It has since grown into a full-line home furnishings retailer with 119 stores across 12 Midwestern States and an e-commerce platform [4] .

Contents

Slumberland is among the Nation's leading sellers of La-Z-Boy upholstery [5] and a major regional distributor of mattress brands such as Sealy and Tempur-Pedic [2] . The company remains under family leadership, with Kenny Larson serving as president and chief executive officer.

History

Slumberland Furniture was founded in 1967 by Ken Larson, who opened the company’s first store in Richfield, Minnesota [2] . At the time, the retailer positioned itself as one of the nation’s first specialty “sleep stores,” focusing on mattresses and La-Z-Boy recliners [3] . Early marketing emphasized value bundles, including a 21-piece king-size mattress package priced at $299 [2] , which helped establish the company’s reputation for affordability.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Slumberland expanded its product assortment beyond mattresses and recliners to include bedroom, dining room, and living room furniture. The company also introduced sleep-set bundles and a 90-day comfort guarantee, one of the first of its kind in the Midwest [2] . By the mid-1980s, Slumberland had begun franchising its business model [5] [6] , which contributed to the company’s regional growth [7] .

Headquartered in Oakdale, Minnesota, Slumberland grew steadily through the 1990s and 2000s, adding locations across the Upper Midwest. The retailer became one of the largest La-Z-Boy dealers in the United States, selling more than $1 billion of the brand’s products over its history [5] . The company also became a top seller of Sealy mattresses in the region [5] .

In the 2010s, Slumberland transitioned into a full-line home furnishings retailer, introducing additional national brands such as Ashley, Tempur-Pedic, Purple, and Stearns & Foster, alongside its own private-label lines. The company also expanded its online presence with e-commerce offerings.

Slumberland and its leadership have received recognition within the furniture industry. Founder Ken Larson was inducted into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame in 2024 [4] and received the Bedding Retail Lifetime Achievement Award from Furniture Today [2] in 2025. In 2025, Vice President of Franchise Joshuah Priniski was named to Furniture Today ’s “40 Under 40” list for his role in the company’s franchise operations [8] .

As of 2025, Slumberland operates 119 stores across 12 Midwestern states [9] . Leadership remains within the Larson family, with Kenny Larson, the founder’s son, serving as president and chief executive officer.

Community Involvement

Slumberland Furniture has a long history of community engagement and charitable initiatives. In 1991, the company established the 40 Winks Foundation [2] , which donates new beds to children and families in need. Since its founding, the foundation has distributed more than 50,000 beds across the Midwest [10] [11] .

Beyond the foundation, the company and its leadership have supported various educational and cultural causes. Ken and Barbara Larson founded God’s Ancient Library in 2013 [2] , an initiative dedicated to donating Torah scrolls to schools and research institutions. Slumberland has also partnered with regional organizations such as Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities to provide furniture and financial support for underserved families [12] .

The company’s community involvement has been recognized within the furniture industry, reinforcing its reputation as both a regional retailer and a socially responsible business.
