Smitha Antony is an Indian-born Australian violinist. She was the first recipient of the Vismaya Balasandra Award, an award constituted by the Sandra Cultural Academy in memory of the late violinist Balabhaskar Chandran, in 2019. [1] [2]
Antony was raised in a family of music enthusiasts. Her father, MJ Antony, was the music teacher at St. Ignatius Loyola Boys High School in Trivandrum, Kerala, and her uncle MJ Michael was the founder of the Indian Youth Chamber Orchestra. Antony started playing the violin at the age of 7. [2] She studied at St. Mary's High School, Trivandrum before graduating from Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum.
Antony met Chandran at the Kerala University Youth Festival, where they were both participating in violin competitions: Antony in the Western classical violin category and Chandran in the Indian classical violin category. After Antony won her category, Chandran asked her to teach him Western violin; the following year, Chandran won the Western classical violin category at the festival. [2]
After Chandran's death, Antony was inspired to create her own adaptation of the song Lag ja gale; this was the composition which won her the Vismaya Balasandra Award. [2]
Antony migrated to Australia in 2000 and lives in Sydney. [1] She composes her own music and continues to participate in various cultural programs.
Midori Goto, who performs under the mononym Midori, is a Japanese-born American violinist. She made her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11 as a surprise guest soloist at the New Year's Eve Gala in 1982. In 1986 her performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival with Leonard Bernstein conducting his own composition made the front-page headlines in The New York Times. Midori became a celebrated child prodigy, and one of the world's preeminent violinists as an adult.
Thattil Antony Johnson, popularly known as Johnson Master, was an Indian film score composer and music director who has given music to some of the most important motion pictures of Malayalam cinema, including those for Koodevide, Namukku Paarkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam, Vadakkunokkiyantram, Perumthachan, Njan Gandharvan, Ponthan Mada, and Bhoothakkannadi. Regarded as one of the finest composers in the industry, he was noted for his lyrical and expressive melodies together with simple but rich tonal compositions of thematic music. Johnson is a recipient of National Film Awards twice and Kerala State Film Awards five times.

M.S. Gopalakrishnan, a.k.a. MSG, was a violinist in the field of Carnatic music. He is commonly grouped with Lalgudi Jayaraman and T.N.Krishnan as part of the violin-trinity of Carnatic Music. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1997. He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Kalaimamani, Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards.
Sunanda Nair is an Indian dancer trained in Mohiniattam. She did her master's degree in this dance form from Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya affiliated to the University of Mumbai. She has completed her PhD from University of Mumbai for her thesis "Intrinsic Lyrical Feminism in Mohiniattam". She was born in Mumbai, India.
