The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Act 2016 is an act of the Scottish Parliament which prohibited smoking in a motor vehicle with a child.
The legislation was supported by the Scottish government and opposition parties in the Scottish Parliament. [1]
Those who violate the legislation are subject to a fine of up to £100 or £1,000 if the case goes to court. [2] [3]
Forest, a smokers' group, described the legislation as patronising. [4]
BMA Scotland supported the legislation. [3]
A 2021 study by the University of Glasgow found that asthma hospitalisations fell by 1.49% per month among children under the age of 5 with no effect for children between the ages of 2014 and 2021. [5]
