Snap Judgment is a weekly storytelling radio program and podcast, produced in Oakland, California [1] and distributed by Public Radio Exchange, [2] created by Glynn Washington and Mark Ristich, and hosted by Glynn Washington.

Contents

Guests have included comedian Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, [3] Antwan Williams, [4] Alison Becker, Ise Lyfe and Earlonne Woods. [4] Each episode is made up of narrative pieces on a common theme. The program first aired in July 2010. [5] [6] As of November 2017, the podcast was downloaded approximately 2 million times per month, and the program is broadcast across more than 450 radio stations nationwide. [7]

History

In 2008, Glynn Washington won the Public Radio Talent Quest, a talent contest staged by Public Radio Exchange and Corporation for Public Broadcasting. [1] Glynn later secured a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that provided initial seed funding to launch Snap Judgment as a radio and podcast program in 2010.

From 2015 through 2020 Snap Judgment was distributed by WNYC . [8] From 2020 to 2021, the program was broadcast in Canada on CBC Radio One. Snap Judgment is currently distributed by PRX.

In 2017, Snap Judgment Studios launched its first spinoff program, "Snap Judgment Presents 'Spooked'". Spooked immediately leapt the charts to become one of Podtrac's "Top Ten New Podcasts of the Year" and reached the Number One spot on Apple Podcasts. Glynn hosted and helped produce the "Heaven's Gate" podcast with Pineapple Street Media, which also went to Number One on Apple Podcasts. In April 2023, Spooked became a weekly podcast, and later that year Spooked LIVE performed sold out shows in both Los Angeles and Oakland.

In 2022 Glynn Washington and Mark Ristich were inducted into the Podcast Hall of Fame.

In August 2023, KQED acquired Snap Judgment Studios KQED. [9]

On October 26, 2023, the production employees of Snap Judgment voted overwhelmingly to be represented by NABET-CWA Local 51.

Sound Opinions is an independent radio talk show and podcast based in Chicago. It focuses on the discussion of music genres, history, artists and albums. It airs weekly on over 150 public radio stations nationwide and is syndicated though the Public Radio Exchange. It is also available for download and streaming worldwide as a podcast.

Studio 360 was an American weekly public radio program about the arts and culture hosted by novelist Kurt Andersen and produced by Public Radio Exchange (PRX) and Slate in New York City. The program's stated goal was to "Get inside the creative mind" and used arts and culture as a lens to understand the world. The program was created by PRI based on an identified need for programming dedicated and focused on arts and culture journalism in media. While the show featured regular guest interviews with authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Jonathan Lethem, and Miranda July, and musicians as diverse as Laura Veirs, Don Byron, and k.d. lang, it also had several recurring segments. The American Icons series attempted to understand lasting American cultural icons such as The Great Gatsby and Kind of Blue. The hour on Moby-Dick was the recipient of the 2004 Peabody Award. Public Radio International and WNYC co-produced the show from 2000 to 2017, when Slate replaced WNYC. After PRI merged with PRX, PRX continued to syndicate the show until the program's cancellation. <i>Radiolab</i> American radio program

Radiolab is a radio program and podcast produced by WNYC, a public radio station based in New York City, and broadcast on more than 570 public radio stations in the United States. The show has earned many industry awards for its "imaginative use of radio" including a National Academies Communication Award and two Peabody Awards.

The Takeaway was a weekday radio news program co-created and co-produced by Public Radio International and WNYC. Its editorial partner was GBH; at launch the BBC World Service and The New York Times were also editorial partners. In addition to co-producing the program, PRX also distributed the program nationwide to its affiliated stations. The program debuted on WNYC in New York, WGBH in Boston, and WEAA in Baltimore. At time of its last broadcast, the program had approximately 241 carrying stations across the country, including markets in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, Portland, Boston, and more.

Dhaya Lakshminarayanan is an American comedian, performance artist, TV host, and storyteller. She has performed at venues such as San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Siren Theater, San Francisco's Punchline Comedy Club and Cobb's Comedy Club, the Brava Theatre, Throckmorton Theatre, and others. She has also performed at comedy festivals such as SF Sketchfest 2015 and SF Sketchfest 2020; the Desi Comedy Fest, America's only South Asian comedy festival; and the Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. In 2019, Lakshminarayanan, Will Durst, and W. Kamau Bell appeared as guests on KQED in regard to the controversial proposed closure of the historic San Francisco Punchline Comedy Club. The same year, she regularly opened for Greg Proops at the Punchline.
