Society and Technology Institute

The Society and Technology Institute (Dutch : Instituut Samenleving en Technologie) was from 2000 until 2013 a Flemish institute. The institute was associated with the Flemish Parliament, for which it provided advice on complex issues involving society and technology.

Until 2008 it was called the Flemish Institute for Scientific and Technological Aspect research (Dutch : Vlaams Instituut voor Wetenschappelijk en Technologisch Aspectenonderzoek, viWTA).

The Flemish Parliament abolished the institute per 1 January 2013. The technology assessment function and several employees were transferred to the Flemish Institute for Technological Research.

The Flemish Council for Science and Innovation, previously known as the Flemish Council for Science Policy is the advisory body of the Flemish Government and the Flemish Parliament for science and technology policy. The VRWB provides advice concerning science and technology policy on its own initiative or on request. It provides recommendations, conducts investigations and provides its opinion on science and technology for Flanders. Dirk Boogmans is the Chairman of the Flemish Council for Science and Innovation. In 2016, it was abolished and reformed as the Flemish Advisory Council for Innovation and Entrepreneurialism.

Science and technology in Flanders, being the Flemish Community and more specifically the northern region of Belgium (Europe), is well developed with the presence of several universities and research institutes. These are strongly spread over all Flemish cities, from Kortrijk and Bruges in the Western side, over Ghent as a major university center alongside Antwerp, Brussels and Leuven to Hasselt and Diepenbeek in the Eastern side.

Flanders in Action

Flanders in Action is a social and economic action programme for the future of Flanders which was established by the Flemish government on 11 July 2006.

The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) is a Dutch degree awarded to graduates of a Technological Designer (engineering) program that develop their students' capabilities to work within a professional context. These programs focus on applied techniques and design, in their respective engineering fields. The technological PDEng designer programs were initiated at the request of the Dutch high-tech industry. High-tech companies need professionals who can design and develop complex new products and processes and offer innovative solutions. All programs work closely together with high-tech industry, offering trainees the opportunity to participate in large-scale, interdisciplinary design projects. With this cooperation, PDEng programs provide trainees a valuable network of contacts in industry. Each program covers a different technological field, for example managing complex architectural construction projects, designing mechanisms for user interfaces for consumer products or developing high-tech software systems for software-intensive systems. Participation in a program that awards the abbreviation PDEng requires at least a Master's degree in a related field.

The Institute for the Encouragement of Scientific Research and Innovation of Brussels or ISRIB promotes scientific research and technological innovation in the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium within companies, universities and higher education institutes within the region. It provides support to both profit-oriented research and non-profit-oriented-research.
