The Society for Integrative Oncology (abbreviated SIO) is a multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to studying how to apply evidence-based integrative medicine to the treatment of cancer. It was established in 2003 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. [1] The founding president of the SIO was Barrie Cassileth, [2] and in October 2013, Heather Greenlee of Columbia University was named president. [3] Since the SIO's November 2015 meeting, its president has been Jun Mao of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. [4] Each fall, beginning in 2004, the SIO has held an international conference. [2] From 2003 to 2010, the SIO published a peer-reviewed journal: from 2003 to 2005, it was entitled the Journal of Cancer Integrative Medicine, after which it was renamed the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology.

Mirko Beljanski was a French-Serbian molecular biologist, notable in the latter part of his career for devising and promoting a number of ineffective cancer treatments, and for treating French president François Mitterrand with them.

Oncology Branch of medicine dealing with cancer

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology is an oncologist. The name's etymological origin is the Greek word ὄγκος (óngkos), meaning 1. "burden, volume, mass" and 2. "barb", and the Greek word λόγος (logos), meaning "study". The neoclassical term oncology was used from 1618, initially in neo-Greek, in cognizance of Galen's work on abnormal tumors, De tumoribus præter naturam.

Charles Sawyers

Charles L. Sawyers is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator who holds the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Chair of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). HOPP is a program created in 2006 that comprises researchers from many disciplines to bridge clinical and laboratory discoveries.

Alan Ashworth, FRS is a British molecular biologist, noted for his work on genes involved in cancer susceptibility. He is currently the President of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, San Francisco, a multidisciplinary research and clinical care organisation that is one of the largest cancer centres in the Western United States. He was previously CEO of the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London.

Professor Kefah Mokbel FRCS is the lead consultant breast surgeon at the London Breast Institute of the Princess Grace Hospital, Professor (Honorary) of Breast Cancer Surgery at Brunel University London, an honorary consultant breast surgeon at St George's Hospital. Kefah Mokbel is the founder and current president of Breast Cancer Hope; a UK-based charity "dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of life in women diagnosed with breast cancer". He was appointed as a substantive consultant breast surgeon at St George's Hospital NHS trust in February 2001. He was named in Tatler magazine's Best Doctors Guide as one of the featured "Top Breast Surgeons" in 2006, 2007 and 2013. In November 2010 he was named in the Times magazine's list of Britain's Top Doctors.

David Gorski Science-based medicine advocate

David Henry Gorski is an American surgical oncologist, professor of surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and a surgical oncologist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, specializing in breast cancer surgery. He is an outspoken skeptic, and a critic of alternative medicine and the anti-vaccination movement. He is the author of a blog, Respectful Insolence, and the managing editor of the website Science-Based Medicine.

Eric P. Winer is chief of the Division of Women's Cancers and director of the Breast Oncology Program in the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. He also serves as the Institute's chief strategy officer. He is the Thompson Senior Investigator in Breast Cancer Research and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Winer is a medical oncologist and clinical researcher specializing in breast cancer. He has focused his career on treating patients with breast cancer and advancing understanding of the disease.

Thomas P. Loughran Jr. American physician-scientist

Thomas P. Loughran, Jr. is an American physician-scientist who specializes in cancer research and treatment. He became director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center, F. Palmer Weber-Smithfield Foods Professor of Oncology Research and Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia on August 15, 2013. Between 2003 and 2013, Loughran served as the founding director of the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and professor of medicine at the Penn State College of Medicine. His previous appointments included program leader of hematologic malignancies at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida, associate director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at SUNY Health Science Center and chief of hematology at the Syracuse Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Syracuse, N.Y. Loughran completed his fellowship in medical oncology in 1985 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington under direction of Nobel Laureate E. Donnall Thomas. He remained on faculty there for seven years. Loughran earned his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia in 1979.

<i>Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine</i> Academic journal

Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering alternative medical treatments. It publishes case reports, original research papers, and systematic reviews. It was established in 1995 by founding editor Larry Dossey and is published bimonthly by InnoVision Health Media. The current editor-in-chief is Andrew W. Campbell.

Richard Margolese, C.M. MD FRCS (C), is a Canadian scientist and has been a leader of multiple research studies that have changed the standard treatment for early stage breast cancer. He is a native of Montreal, Canada.

Lorenzo Cohen is a professor in the Department of General Oncology and Behavioral Science and the director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is also a distinguished clinical professor at the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China. Cohen is a founding member and past president of the Society for Integrative Oncology.

Michael A. Caliguiri is the president of City of Hope National Medical Center and the physician-in-chief. He was elected president of the American Association for Cancer Research for 2016–2017.

Kenneth C. Anderson is an American hematologist-oncologist and cancer researcher who is primarily known for advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma. He directs the Lebow Institute for Myeloma Therapeutics and Jerome Lipper Myeloma Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and is the Kraft Family Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Steven T. Rosen is the Provost and chief scientific officer of the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. In addition to directing City of Hope’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rosen leads the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope, and the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences. Previously (1989-2014) Rosen was the director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University, which was awarded comprehensive cancer center status by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1997. Rosen received the Northwestern University Medical School Alumni Achievement Award in 1994.

Catherine Naliaka Nyongesa Watta, is a Kenyan physician and radiation oncologist, who is the founder, owner and chief executive of Texas Cancer Centre, in Nairobi, the capital and largest city in the county.

Maryam Lustberg American breast oncologist

Maryam Beheshti Lustberg is an American breast oncologist. She is the Director of The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Chief of Breast Medical Oncology at Yale Cancer Center. Lustberg previously served as the Medical Director of Supportive Care at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and President-Elect of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer. She is also an associate editor for the peer-reviewed medical journal covering oncology nursing with respect to cancer survivors called Journal of Cancer Survivorship.
