The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) is an American national organization of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving public health through the use of minimally invasive, image-guided therapeutic interventions for disease management. [1]

It was founded in 1973 as the Society of Cardiovascular Radiology by an active group in the field who wanted to further develop interventional aspects of radiology. It changed its name to the Society of CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology in 1983. In April 2002, the name was changed to Society of Interventional Radiology in order to emphasise the expanding role of interventional radiology that is no longer limited to the cardiovascular system. The society comprises about 8,000 members (March 2023): including practicing physicians, trainees, scientists and clinical associates, such as physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiologic technologists and paramedical professionals. [1] Katharine L. Krol served as the Society's first female president. [ citation needed ] The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) is the Society's official journal.

Political action committee

The Society of Interventional Radiology Political Action Committee (SIRPAC) is a nonpartisan political organization that supports political candidates and elected officials who are dedicated to advancing the interests of interventional radiologists and the patients they serve. SIRPAC is funded through donations from SIR members, and uses these funds to support political candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to policies that promote patient access to interventional radiology services and advance the specialty.

During the 2022 election cycle, SIRPAC donated $135,682 to candidates (65.65% to Democrats, 34.35% to Republicans) and raised more than $180,000 from members. [2]

Angioplasty, also known as balloon angioplasty and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure used to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins, typically to treat arterial atherosclerosis. A deflated balloon attached to a catheter is passed over a guide-wire into the narrowed vessel and then inflated to a fixed size. The balloon forces expansion of the blood vessel and the surrounding muscular wall, allowing an improved blood flow. A stent may be inserted at the time of ballooning to ensure the vessel remains open, and the balloon is then deflated and withdrawn. Angioplasty has come to include all manner of vascular interventions that are typically performed percutaneously.

In medicine, a stent is a tube usually constructed of a metallic alloy or a polymer. It is inserted into the lumen of an anatomic vessel or duct to keep the passageway open. Stenting refers to the placement of a stent. The word "stent" is also used as a verb to describe the placement of such a device, particularly when a disease such as atherosclerosis has pathologically narrowed a structure such as an artery.

Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical specialty that performs various minimally-invasive procedures using medical imaging guidance, such as x-ray fluoroscopy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or ultrasound. IR performs both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures through very small incisions or body orifices. Diagnostic IR procedures are those intended to help make a diagnosis or guide further medical treatment, and include image-guided biopsy of a tumor or injection of an imaging contrast agent into a hollow structure, such as a blood vessel or a duct. By contrast, therapeutic IR procedures provide direct treatment—they include catheter-based medicine delivery, medical device placement, and angioplasty of narrowed structures.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which vascular diseases involving the arteries, veins, or lymphatic vessels, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction. The specialty evolved from general and cardiovascular surgery where it refined the management of just the vessels, no longer treating the heart or other organs. Modern vascular surgery includes open surgery techniques, endovascular techniques and medical management of vascular diseases - unlike the parent specialities. The vascular surgeon is trained in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting all parts of the vascular system excluding the coronaries and intracranial vasculature. Vascular surgeons also are called to assist other physicians to carry out surgery near vessels, or to salvage vascular injuries that include hemorrhage control, dissection, occlusion or simply for safe exposure of vascular structures.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive procedure performed in interventional radiology to restrict a tumor's blood supply. Small embolic particles coated with chemotherapeutic drugs are injected selectively through a catheter into an artery directly supplying the tumor. These particles both block the blood supply and induce cytotoxicity, attacking the tumor in several ways.

Uterine artery embolization is a procedure in which an interventional radiologist uses a catheter to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the uterine body. The procedure is primarily done for the treatment of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. Since uterine fibroids are the most common indication, it is also often referred to as uterine fibroid embolization. Compared to surgical treatment for fibroids such as a hysterectomy, in which a woman's uterus is removed, uterine artery embolization may be beneficial in women who wish to retain their uterus. Other reasons for uterine artery embolization are postpartum hemorrhage and uterine arteriovenous malformations.

Interventional neuroradiology (INR) also known as neurointerventional surgery (NIS), endovascular therapy (EVT), endovascular neurosurgery, and interventional neurology is a medical subspecialty of neurosurgery, neuroradiology, intervention radiology and neurology specializing in minimally invasive image-based technologies and procedures used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the head, neck, and spine.

Josef Rösch was a researcher and pioneer in vascular and interventional radiology. Rösch was the first director of the Dotter Interventional Institute and served until 1995. He is credited with developing the TIPS procedure in 1969 and the incorporation of embolization into the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding in 1971. Dr. Rösch's work in the field of interventional radiology spans half a century and has resulted in over 470 scientific papers, multiple book chapters and dozens of scientific exhibits.

Overscreening, also called unnecessary screening, is the performance of medical screening without a medical indication to do so. Screening is a medical test in a healthy person who is showing no symptoms of a disease and is intended to detect a disease so that a person may prepare to respond to it. Screening is indicated in people who have some threshold risk for getting a disease, but is not indicated in people who are unlikely to develop a disease. The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is the major national academic society for vascular surgery in the United States. Its mission includes education, research, career development and advocacy. The SVS is the national advocate for more than 6,000 specialty-trained vascular surgeons and other medical professionals who are dedicated to the prevention and cure of vascular disease. The association was founded in 1946. The SVS is the sponsor organization for the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) and for the national Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM).

Interventional oncology is a subspecialty field of interventional radiology that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cancer-related problems using targeted minimally invasive procedures performed under image guidance. Interventional oncology has developed to a separate pillar of modern oncology and it employs X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to help guide miniaturized instruments to allow targeted and precise treatment of solid tumours located in various organs of the human body, including but not limited to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and bones. Interventional oncology treatments are routinely carried out by interventional radiologists in appropriate settings and facilities.

Radiation lobectomy is a form of radiation therapy used in interventional radiology to treat liver cancer. It is performed in patients that would be surgical candidates for resection, but cannot undergo surgery due to insufficient remaining liver tissue. It consists of injecting small radioactive beads loaded with yttrium-90 into the hepatic artery feeding the hepatic lobe in which the tumor is located. This is done with the intent of inducing growth in the contralateral hepatic lobe, not dissimilarly from portal vein embolization (PVE).

Transarterial bland embolization is a catheter-based tumor treatment of the liver. In this procedure, a variety of embolizing agents can be delivered through the tumor’s feeding artery in order to completely occlude the tumor’s blood supply. The anti-tumor effects are solely based on tumor ischemia and infarction of tumor tissue, as no chemotherapeutic agents are administered. The rationale for the use of bland embolization for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and/or other hyper-vascular tumors is based on the fact that normal liver receives a dual blood supply from the hepatic artery (25%) and the portal vein (75%). As the tumor grows, it becomes increasingly dependent on the hepatic artery for blood supply. Once a tumor nodule reaches a diameter of 2 cm or more, most of the blood supply is derived from the hepatic artery. Therefore, bland embolization and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) consist of the selective angiographic occlusion of the tumor arterial blood supply with a variety of embolizing agents, with or without the precedence of local chemotherapy infusion. The occlusion by embolic particles results in tumor hypoxia and necrosis, without affecting the normal hepatic parenchyma.

Anne Christine Roberts is an American interventional radiologist who is credited with the invention of the Roberts Uterine Catheter (RUC), a catheter designed to facilitate navigation through the uterine arteries and currently used widely for uterine artery embolization procedures. She also served as president of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) (1996-1997) and was the second woman to become president of the society.

Ethel Jean Finck, M.D., was an American interventional radiologist, credited as one of three women founders of the Society of Interventional Radiology in 1973. She was also the inventor of the Finck cardiac catheter.

Anna-Maria Belli, MD, FCIRSE is a British interventional radiologist known for her work in vascular interventional radiology and for holding leadership positions in interventional radiology societies in Britain and Europe.

Wael Fahed Al-Husami is a Jordanian cardiologist and interventional cardiologist, scientist and medical educator at Tufts University and a faculty member at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, and a faculty Member at BIDMC Disaster Medicine Fellowship - Harvard Medical School. Wael Al-Husami is also a visiting professor of Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Ali A Haydar is Lebanese physician who is an emeritus professor at the American University of Beirut and is the Chief Medical Officer at Aman Hospital, Doha, Qatar and previously the Chairman of radiology at the Clemenceau Medical Center affiliated with Johns Hopkins International since 2018. He is also a member of the Radiological Society of North America, British society of Interventional and Cardiovascular Radiology and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and fellow of the Pan Arab Interventional radiology society.
