Sokoto United is a Nigerian football club based in Sokoto. They play in the second-tier division in Nigerian football, the Nigeria National League. (Giginya Memorial Stadium) is their home. It has capacity for 5,000 people.

Sokoto is a major city located in the extreme northwest of Nigeria, near the confluence of the Sokoto River and the Rima River. As of 2006 it has a population of people over 427,760. Sokoto is the modern-day capital of Sokoto State and was previously the capital of the north-western states.
The Sokoto Caliphate was a Sunni Muslim caliphate in West Africa. It was founded by Usman dan Fodio in 1804 during the Fulani jihads after defeating the Hausa Kingdoms in the Fulani War. The boundaries of the caliphate make up present-day Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria. It was dissolved when the British and Germans conquered the area in 1903 and annexed it into the newly established Northern Nigeria Protectorate and Kamerun respectively.

He left office in December 2011 when he decided to run in the People Democratic party (PDP) primaries for governorship of Sokoto State.

Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North, Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.
