Solid n Mind (formerly Solid State) were a British hip hop group that formed in 1989. The group was composed of Whirlwind D (Dudley Jaynes) [1] and Johnny F.

Biography

Previously, Johnny F had hosted radio shows and was a record dealer, whilst Whirlwind D had been working with the fledgling Kold Sweat Records label. In Spring 1990, having recorded a couple of tracks ("An Original Break" and "Centre Stage"), the Liberty Grooves label was conceived. Reaching number 3 in the Tower Records Dance Chart in December 1990, [2] "An Original Break" would mark the beginning of Liberty Grooves.

"An Original Break" sampled "Big Beat" and "Rupert The Bear" amongst other things in order to take a sarcastic look at the lack of originality in sampling at the time. [3] In contrast to this, their follow-up ("Centre Stage") opted for harder samples and battle rhymes. [4] "Centre Stage", which was to be backed with "Woke with Nothin'", was due to be released as LIB003. However owing to geographical differences, other than a cassette sampler, [5] the record did not receive an official release until 2009 and the relaunch of Liberty Grooves.

"Centre Stage" would become the group's best known track in the early 90s and was regularly featured in shows and freestyles in London (such as at the Liberty Grooves New Years Jam alongside MC Mell O, Braintax, Def Tex and Lil Rodney Cee of Funky Four Plus One fame) [6] and on the South Coast at venues such as The Brook. In addition, the track was recently[ when? ] featured on The Crown Jewels Part 2 CD by Aroe and the Soundmakers, in its 1990 demo format.

Before the release of the Trials Of Life EP by the Gutter Snypes on the imprint, Johnny F spent much of his time running Liberty Grooves - The Hip Hop Shop in Tooting. At the same time, Whirlwind was living on the South Coast. Despite this, the duo wrote another track, "Battle Tipped Rhyme", [7] which although never ready for release, was performed on a number of occasions. This track was rebuilt by The Assembly Worker and Whirlwind D, and finally released in 2010 to mark 20 years of the Liberty Grooves record label. Whirlwind D continues to record and perform, using the Solid n Mind name in the present day. He now records with Tru-Tone Records and released the WD40 EP in 2012.

Breaking Atoms is the first album by American/Canadian hip hop group Main Source, released in 1991 on Wild Pitch Records. It was produced by the group, primarily by member Large Professor, with recording sessions taking place during 1990–1991 at Homeboy Studio, Power Play Studios, and Libra Digital in New York City. Breaking Atoms is distinguished stylistically by its incorporation of jazz and soul music samples. The album has been highly regarded by music writers due mostly to its production, whose heavy and original use of sampling influenced hip hop producers for a considerable portion of the 1990s.

The album is an Instrumental hip hop album and the second installment of BBE Records Beat Generation series, following Jay Dee's Welcome to Detroit album. The instrumental songs were originally recorded between 1990 and 1995, but were remixed and continued when putting together the album. All songs featuring vocals were recorded exclusively for this project between 2000 and 2001.

Liberty Grooves was a hip hop record label and shop based in Tooting, South London and owned by Johnny F. It was most active during the 1990s, and the shop served as a performance venue as well. Records were released on this label by groups including Solid n Mind and Gutter Snypes, and the artist DJ Noize.

Gutter Snypes are a British hip hop group who formed in 1993. The group was composed of Cel One, Sigher and Prime Cuts. Previously the Cel One had recorded under the name Most Dominant for the Kold Sweat Records label, with DJ First Rate and DJ Renegade. Prior to this, Cel One and First Rate had been part of the First Down Crew in Kent.

Coalmine Records is a Brooklyn, New York-based independent hip-hop record label. Coalmine's catalog includes Pharaohe Monch, El Da Sensei, Kool G. Rap, Talib Kweli, Large Professor, Heltah Skeltah, Dilated Peoples, Bekay, Big K.R.I.T, Custom Made, Emilio Rojas, Torae, Skyzoo, Termanology, Alchemist, J.R.Rotem, M-Phazes, Illmind, Khrysis, Shuko, Domingo, DJ Kayslay, DJ Revolution, and DJ Babu.

The Brotherhood were a pioneering UK hip-hop group with a solid following across the UK from the early 1990s. Releases with seminal UK Hip Hop label Bite It! Recordings were followed by a later move to Virgin. The 1996 album Elementalz has been described as one of the best UK hip hop albums ever made and "a staggering achievement in British music". The band finally split in 1998 and have since been credited as one of the most influential bands on the 90s UK hip-hop scene.

"Sucker M.C.'s" is a song by American hip hop group Run-D.M.C. It was first released in 1983 as B-side to "It's Like That". The two-sided release marked the start of Run-D.M.C.'s career as their first single, and it is widely regarded as ushering in a new school of hip hop artists with a street image and an abrasive, minimalist sound that marked them out from their predecessors. Both tracks were collected on the trio's self-titled debut album in 1984. WBAU was the first station to play the two songs.
