Professor Somnath Dasagupta was the vice-chancellor of Assam University till 13 November 2015 [1] [2] and professor of metamorphic geology at Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. [3]

Career

Professor Dasgupta had his bachelor's degree in geological sciences from Jadavpur University in the year 1971. From the same institute he completed his master's degree in applied geology in 1974 and PhD in 1979 titled "A study of the geology and ore mineralisation along the Madan Kudan - Kolihan section, Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, India". He served Geological Survey of India for four years. He joined Jadavpur University as faculty in 1981. He shifted to Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Kolkata in 2009. He is having several post-doctoral research with the collaboration of different international institution, like Hokkaido University, Japan (1984–85), at the University of Bonn, Germany (1991–92, 1996, 1997) and at Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany (2002–03, 2006, 2008). He was the director of National Centre of Experimental Mineralogy & Petrology, University of Allahabad from August 2010 to July 2011 and dean of Research & Development, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Kolkata, from April to June 2012. He is distinguished visiting professor at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He took over as fifth vice-chancellor of Assam University, Silchar. [4]

Other contributions

He has co-edited three books. These are Geological Society of London Special Publication No. 119 (1997), Geological Society of London Special Publication No. 206 (2003), and Physics & Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, published by the Indian National Science Academy and Springer-Verlag (2009). He was co-editor of four special issues of different journals. He developed software for Teaching Petrology in the 21st Century (American Geophysical Union). He was the International Leader of UNESCO-IGCP Project 318 on Polymetallic Deposits (1992–95) and coordinated international research activities. He served as a member of Project Monitoring Committees of CSIR and DST, and co-ordinates research cooperation between India and Germany as an Honorary Advisor of DAAD. Dasgupta is a member of INSA Council since 2009.

Pramatha Nath Bose was a pioneering Indian geologist and paleontologist. Bose was educated at Krishnagar Government College and later at St. Xavier's College of the University of Calcutta when he obtained a Gilchrist scholarship to study in London in 1874. He graduated in 1877 and went on to study at the Royal School of Mines in London and excelled in biology and paleontology. During his study at Cambridge he became a friend of Rabindranath Tagore. He is a member of XII Five Year Plan (2012–2017) of Planning Commission sub-committee on "Strengthening Community Engagement in Higher Education Institutions". He is also expert reviewer for earth sciences at Union Public Service Commission, India. He is Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, India (FASc) and National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc).

Bikash Sinha was an Indian physicist who was active in the fields of nuclear physics and high energy physics. Sinha was the director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre and the chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur in June 2005. He was also a member of scientific advisory board to the Prime Minister of India.

Talat Ahmad is an Indian Earth scientist and former professor at department of Geology, University of Delhi. Currently, he is serving as Chairman of Governing body which oversees Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun from December 2021 onwards and has taken full charge from 1 June 2022 and served the office till 30 November 2027. Previously, he commenced his second stint as vice chancellor of University of Kashmir on 6 August 2018 and served the office till 20 May 2022. After serving as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, he resigned from the post a few months short of his full term. He was shortlisted by a committee constituted by the governor to shortlist a panel for the post. He had earlier taken over as Vice-chancellor of University of Kashmir from Professor Riyaz Punjabi on 1 June 2011. Prior to this, he was teaching geology at the University of Delhi.

Chandan Dasgupta, is an Indian theoretical physicist known for his contributions in condensed matter physics and statistical physics. He is at present a professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He was the former dean of Undergraduate Program at Indian Institute of Science.

Pulak Sengupta is an Indian petrologist and a professor and former head of the Department of Geological Sciences of Jadavpur University. He is known for his studies on grain-scale reaction mechanism and ultra-high temperature regional scale metamorphism and his studies have been documented in several peer-reviewed articles; ResearchGate and Google Scholar, online repositories of scientific articles, have listed 31 and 60 of them respectively. Besides, he has contributed chapters to many books published by others. He has also mentored doctoral scholars in their studies.

Arup Kumar Raychaudhuri is an Indian condensed matter physicist, materials scientist and a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Known for his pioneering work on the interplay of disorder and interaction, Raychaudhuri is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy as well as the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials. He is a recipient of a number of awards such as Millennium Medal of the Indian Science Congress, ICS Gold Medal of the Materials Research Society of India and FICCI Award. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1994.

Rajdeep Dasgupta is a professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Rice University. In his research, he studies the role of subsurface melting and magma on the origin and evolution of the Earth and other terrestrial planets.
