SongwritingWith:Soldiers (SW:S) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that pairs veterans and active-duty service members with professional songwriters in retreat settings to craft songs about combat and the return home.
In 2008, Austin-based singer/songwriter Darden Smith performed at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for American soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. After returning home, he met with members of the Texas National Guard and learned about Angel Flights, a program in which pilots fly fallen service members home to the United States. Smith contacted a longtime friend, singer-songwriter Radney Foster, and together they wrote a song called "Angel Flight," which Foster recorded on his CD Revival (2009). [1] Smith was invited to write with veterans for LifeQuest Transitions, a group that helped wounded veterans with their transition to civilian life. [2] Mary Judd, a writer and developer of special programs, accompanied him on this visit with the intention of writing an article. When the two saw the impact of collaborative songwriting on the veterans, Judd began developing the full retreat programming around the songwriting sessions. SongwritingWith:Soldiers officially launched in 2012. [3] [4]
Since its founding in 2012, SW:S has held more than 50 retreats and workshops at locations across the U.S., including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Montana, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington [5] [6] - serving more than 700 attendees, expanding to 2-3 family members and subsequently to 3-5 peers, impacting thousands of community members. At these events, veterans and service members sit down with songwriters, share stories, and write songs. [8] The process fosters trust, creativity, and healing. "Many of the soldiers said they shared personal stories with the musicians that they had discussed only with their wife or husband — if at all." [9]
On the final day of workshops and retreats, the new songs are performed by the musicians and professionally recorded. Songs are registered with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) with veterans as co-writers of their songs and they have ownership of their creative work. [9] SW:S has expanded to include songwriting retreats for military families, military couples, and Gold Star families. [10]
The SW:S program is supported by grants and donations. Key funding partners have included: ASCAP Foundation; Boulder Crest Foundation; Bob Woodruff Foundation; Mayerson Foundation; Mid-America Arts Alliance; NAMM Foundation; Veterans United Foundation, and the USO. Photographers Michael O'Brien, Bryan Laskey, Rick Loomis, Stacey Pearsall, and Ed Rode have taken portraits of veterans and songwriters at a series of retreats. Videographer and veteran James Monk, Mercy Lamp Productions, has filmed many of the retreats. [3]
The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) is an American not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that collectively licenses the public performance rights of its members' musical works to venues, broadcasters, and digital streaming services.
The Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) is an American institution founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer, music publisher/songwriter Abe Olman, and publisher/executive Howie Richmond to honor those whose work, represent, and maintain, the heritage and legacy of a spectrum of the most beloved English language songs from the world's popular music songbook. It not only celebrates these established songwriters, but is also involved in the development of new English language songwriting talent through workshops, showcases, and scholarships. There are many programs designed to teach and discover new English language songwriters. Nile Rodgers serves as the organization's chairman.
Wayland D. Holyfield is a prominent American songwriter and leader in the songwriting community. His music has been regarded as a standard for “honest simplicity” in the Nashville writing community.
Rodney Crowell is an American musician, known primarily for his work as a singer and songwriter in country music. Crowell has had five number one singles on Hot Country Songs, all from his 1988 album Diamonds & Dirt. He has also written songs and produced for other artists.
James Douglas Vallance is a Canadian songwriter, arranger and producer. He is best known as the songwriting partner of Canadian musician Bryan Adams. Vallance began his professional career as the original drummer and main songwriter for Canadian rock band Prism under the pseudonym "Rodney Higgs." In addition to Adams, Vallance has written songs for many famous international artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Roger Daltrey, Tina Turner, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Europe, Kiss, Scorpions, Anne Murray, and Joe Cocker. His most recognizable songs are "What About Love" (Heart), "Spaceship Superstar" (Prism), "Run to You", "Cuts Like a Knife", "Heaven", "Summer of '69", "Now and Forever ", and "Edge of a Dream". He also co-wrote "Tears Are Not Enough" for Northern Lights for Africa, an ensemble of Canadian recording artists in support of the 1985 African famine relief. He has won the Canadian music industry Juno award for Composer of the Year four times. Vallance is a Member of the Order of Canada.

Terri Ann Hendrix is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and independent artist who has been writing and performing an eclectic mix of Americana genre, encompassing folk, pop, country, blues, and jazz, since 1990. Since 1988 Hendrix has been based in and near San Marcos, Texas, living as of 2017 in nearby Martindale, after growing up in San Antonio, Texas.
Victoria Wenonah Banks is a Nashville-based Canadian singer and songwriter. Her self-produced debut CD When You Can Fly was released on the On Ramp/EMI Canada label in April 2009. The CD earned Banks a 2010 Canadian Indie Award nomination and six nominations at the 2009 Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs) including Album of the Year, Producer of the Year, Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Rising Star, making Banks the most nominated female artist of 2009. "The Wheel," the album's first single, reached the Top 20 on the Radio & Records Country Singles chart earning her a 2010 Canadian Radio Music Award nomination. Music videos for "The Wheel" and "When You Can Fly" received airplay on CMT Canada.

James Timothy DuBois is an American accountant, songwriter and recording industry executive based in Nashville who has headed both Arista Records and Universal South Records. As a songwriter he wrote five No. 1 country hits. His most successful song was the world-wide hit "Love in the First Degree" recorded by the group Alabama.

Darden Smith is an Austin-based singer-songwriter known for his lyrics and for weaving folk and Americana influences with rock, pop, and the musical roots of his home state. His debut album, "Native Soil," was released in 1986. His sixteenth album, Western Skies, was released March 25, 2022. Smith has published two books, The Habit of Noticing: Using Creativity to Make a Life (2018) and Western Skies (2022), a companion book for the album of the same name. Over the past two decades, Smith has developed two non-profit programs, The Be An Artist Program (2003) and SongwritingWith: Soldiers (2011). Both use collaborative songwriting to work with groups ranging from children in the classroom to military members returning home from combat. Smith established SongwritingWith:Soldiers as a separate non-profit organization in 2012.
Gary Nicholson is an American singer-songwriter and record producer, known mainly for his work in country music and blues. He is a two-time Grammy winning producer and was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriter's Association Hall of Fame. Nicholson has more than 500 recordings and is best known for his work with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Ringo Starr, BB King, Fleetwood Mac and Billy Joe Shaver.
IHG Army Hotels is a collection of private-sector hotels located on Army installations and Joint Bases throughout the U.S. It is the result of a partnership between InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Lend Lease Group. This partnership was formed in response to the Privatization of Army Lodging (PAL) program by the United States Army. The Army's request for qualifications (RFQ) sought to fulfill specific requirements that included improving the quality of on-post lodgings throughout the U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. This RFQ sought entities with experience in the management of room inventory and hotel service, expertise in construction, and financing experience relating to the upgrades and renovations of existing on-post Army lodgings. U.S. Army awarded the PAL program to Lend Lease (US) with a 50-year lease deal, and IHG, with a 25-year management agreement with options to extend. As part of the RFP agreement, these hotels provide lodging to service members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, government and civilian contractors, military families, veterans, civilians and retirees. There are 76 IHG-branded hotels with about 11,600 rooms located on Army bases in the U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
