Sonny Dixon retired in May 2015 as lead anchor of THE News at 5 & 6 and "WTOC PRIME" on WTOC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Savannah, Georgia, USA. He succeeded Doug Weathers, following Weathers' retirement in 2001. [1]

Dixon is the only Savannah anchor to win the Best Anchor Emmy Award. He has also won numerous AP Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award. Dixon was selected as Savannah's Favorite Media Personality 14 years in a row by readers of Savannah Magazine. He has earned a similar title for many years from the readers of Connect Savannah. Mr. Dixon returned to broadcasting after a long career in politics. He was twice elected to the Garden City, Georgia City Council, then elected to five terms in the Georgia House of Representatives, where he served on key committees, chairing several related to industry and transportation. [1] [3]

A strong supporter of the U.S. military, Dixon was named an Honorary Night Stalker (160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment) by the Secretary of the Army. [4] He was also designated an Honorary U.S. Army Ranger and an Honorary Member of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division.

Dixon was presented with the Freedom Award by the Veteran's Council of Chatham County for consistent support of military veterans and their families. [5]

State representative

Dixon served as a State Representative in the Georgia General Assembly from 1989 to 1997. He represented West Chatham County. While in the House, he served on the Appropriations, Rules, Transportation, Reapportionment, Industry, and Interstate Cooperation Committees. He chaired the State Highways Subcommittee on Transportation. [6]

In 2002, the Georgia Legislature voted to rename the intersection of State Route 21 and Jimmy DeLoach Parkway in his honor. The area is now known as the Sonny Dixon Interchange. [7]

It also passes through or near the communities of Dublin, Metter, and Pooler. I-16's unsigned designation of SR 404 has a spur that is signed in Savannah.

Veterans Parkway is a 6.1-mile (9.8 km) long freeway in the Savannah metropolitan area, connecting Georgetown with downtown Savannah, completely within Chatham County. Other county maintained freeways include Ronald Reagan Parkway, Harry S. Truman Parkway, and a portion of the East–West Connector in Cobb County. Jimmy DeLoach Parkway is a 14.2-mile-long (22.9 km) parkway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located a few miles northwest of the main part of Savannah. It is a road that links Interstate 16 (I-16) in Bloomingdale with Georgia State Route 21 Alternate /SR 21/SR 30 in Port Wentworth. It also has an interchange with I-95. It was named after Jimmy DeLoach, former mayor of Garden City and Chatham County commissioner for District 7.

Benjamin Luther Watson is an American politician who has served in the Georgia State Senate from the 1st District since he was elected in 2014. He previously served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2010 to 2014. Watson is an active member of the Republican Party, and he has served on various legislative committees. The Civil War Memorial in Savannah, Georgia, is a monument honoring soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Located in Forsyth Park, it consists of a 48 foot (15 m) tall shaft topped with a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier. Two bronze busts commemorating notable Confederate army officers flank the monument, which is protected by a railing, one of the only two that still stand around a monument, the other being the Casimir Pulaski Monument in Monterey Square. Originally known as the Confederate Monument, it was dedicated in 1875 to honor Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. Following the Unite the Right rally, the city of Savannah renamed and rededicated the structure in 2018. The monument is one of the oldest and largest Confederate monuments in Georgia.
