Nordland is one of the three northernmost counties in Norway in the Northern Norway region, bordering Troms in the north, Trøndelag in the south, Norrbotten County in Sweden to the east, Västerbotten County to the south-east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The county was formerly known as Nordlandene amt. The county administration is in the town of Bodø. The remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen has been administered from Nordland since 1995.  (Norwegian) or Suortá (Northern Sami) is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Vesterålen. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Sortland. Other population centres in Sortland include the villages of Bø, Holand, Holmstad, Liland, Sigerfjord, Strand, and Vik. The Norwegian Coast Guard has its northern base in Sortland, called Kystvaktskvadron Nord.

Artscape Nordland is an international art project that aims to bring art to people where they live, art museums being few and far apart in the sparsely populated county of Nordland. The first phase of the project lasted from 1992 until 1998. The project included 33 sculptures by 33 artists from 18 different countries placed in 32 municipalities in Nordland county plus 1 municipality in Troms county. Additional artwork was installed in 2009, 2010, and 2015, bringing the total to 36 sculptures installed.

It is part of the Norwegian County Road 82 between the town of Sortland and the neighboring Andøy Municipality. The bridge is 425 metres (1,394 ft) long and the maximum clearance to the sea is 8 metres (26 ft).

Lofot-Tidende covers events in the municipalities of Vestvågøy, Flakstad, and Moskenes in Nordland county and has three employees. The paper's chief editor and general manager is Karin P. Skarby.

Sortland is the largest town and commercial centre in the whole Vesterålen region and is often referred to as "the blue town by the strait" since many of the buildings are painted blue.

It opened in 2004 and it is one of three museum consortia in Nordland; the other two are the Helgeland Museum and the Nordland Museum.
