Tamale is the capital city of the Northern Region of Ghana. It is Ghana's third largest city, with a population of 371,351 people. The city has been ranked as the fastest-growing city in West Africa. Tamale is located in the Kingdom of Dagbon, Ghana's oldest Kingdom. Major ethnic groups who resided in Tamale are Dagomba, Gonja, Mamprusi, Akan, and Dagaaba.

Tamale Metropolitan District is one of the sixteen districts in the Northern Region of Ghana. It was originally established in 1988 as Tamale Municipal District, a municipal district assembly that was created from the former West Dagomba District Council. In August 2004, it was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status. Later, on 24 June 2012, a small northern part of the district was split off to create Sagnarigu District ; the remaining part has been retained as Tamale Metropolitan District. The district is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Tamale as its capital city. The city is the central business hub of the region.
The University for Development Studies, Tamale was established in 1992 as a multi-campus institution. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the four northern regions of the country in mind. These are the Brong Ahafo Region, Northern Region, Upper East Region and the Upper West Region.
Haruna Iddrisu is a Ghanaian lawyer, politician, football enthusiast and owner of Karela United and Steadfast Football clubs owner who is a member of the eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana representing Tamale South. The Tamale Teaching Hospital is a teaching hospital in Tamale in the Northern region and the third largest hospital in Ghana . It serves as a referral hospital for the five northern regions of Ghana. The main hospital in Northern Ghana is 2 km southeast of town. It cooperates with the University for Development Studies in Northern Ghana to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine, nursing, and nutrition. It is the third teaching hospital in Ghana after the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Zagyuri is a community in Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region of Ghana. Tamale School of Hygiene is situated at this location. It is located along the Tamale-Bolgatanga trunk road. Zagyuri is a large populated community and one of the finest modern designed structures located in the new settlement. Sagnarigu Municipal District is one of the sixteen districts in the Northern Region of Ghana. Originally it was part of the then-larger Tamale Municipal District, created in 1988. A small northern part of the Tamale Municipal District was split off to create Sagnarigu District on 24 June 2012, while the remaining part has been retained as the Tamale District. Later, on 15 March 2018, Sagnarigu District was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Sagnarigu Municipal District. The municipality is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Sagnarigu as its capital city. Meanwhile, Tamale remains the capital city of the Northern Region as a whole.
Tamale Senior High School formerly Government Secondary School, Tamale, Gbewaa Secondary School, and more recently Tamale Secondary School is a co-educational second cycle boarding school located at Education Ridge, a suburb of the Sagnarigu Municipality. The school was founded in 1951 by the then British Colonial Authorities as the first second cycle institution of the Northern Territories.
