The South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team represents the University of South Dakota in NCAA Division I basketball. They are currently members of the Summit League. They are led by head coach Eric Peterson and play their home games at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Prior to joining Division I beginning with the 2008–09 season, the Coyotes were members of NCAA Division II in the North Central Conference. They were Division II National Champions in 1958.

The Coyotes have appeared in 13 NCAA Division II Tournaments. Their combined record is 17–12. The Coyotes won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1958.

† - Jackson State, citing policy of the Mississippi Board of Trustees, was compelled to withdraw from the Tournament rather than competing in an interracial contest. [9] This would be the only time such an occurrence would directly mar the tournament, and Jackson State themselves would return to the Tournament in 1964.

The North Dakota State Bison men's basketball team is a part of the athletic program at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota, U.S. They are members of the NCAA Division I and have been part of The Summit League since May 2007. Home games are played at the Scheels Center which is located on the NDSU campus in Fargo, ND. The team shares a conference rival with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The Bison men's head coach is David Richman. On March 10, 2009 the Bison made their biggest comeback in school history with a 66–64 win over Oakland University to win the Summit League tournament championship and became the first team since Southwestern Louisiana in 1972 to advance to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in their first year of eligibility.

The football team plays in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Coyotes were charter members of the Division II North Central Conference and were members until 2008 when it upgraded to Division I.

The South Carolina Gamecocks men's basketball team represents the University of South Carolina and competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). David W. Boots is an American retired basketball coach. He was the former head coach of the University of South Dakota men's basketball team. Boots played at Division III Augsburg College and later coached there. He was named head coach of South Dakota in 1988. Boots retired as head coach in September 2013. He finished as the winningest coach in school history with a record of 503–235.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks men's basketball team represents the University of North Dakota NCAA Division I men's basketball. The Fighting Hawks are members of the Summit League. Prior to membership in the Summit, they were members of Division II's North Central Conference and Division I's Great West Conference and Big Sky Conference. The current head coach is Paul Sather.

The South Dakota Coyotes women's basketball team represents the University of South Dakota in NCAA Division I basketball. They are currently members of the Summit League.
