History
The church was founded in 1903 as Tuam Avenue Baptist Church. It moved to its current location on South Main Street in 1930 and was renamed South Main Baptist Church. Between 1934 and 1939, the church hosted the University of Houston campus before the university moved to its current location on Cullen Blvd.
Sanguinet, Staats, Hedrick A and Gottlieb were hired to design the new structure in 1924 for the then Tuam Baptist Church. [2] The church moved to its current location when the new building was completed in 1930. A service by Dr. George W. Truett was held to commemorate the new structure. [3]
South Main is a member of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. It was a member of the Southern Baptist Convention for over 90 years, but has now withdrawn.

Independence is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Texas, United States. Located twelve miles northeast of Brenham, it was founded in 1835 in Austin's colony of Anglo-Americans. It became a Baptist religious and educational center of the Republic of Texas. In 1845 it became the first site of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
San Marcos Academy or SMA is a private, coeducational, college preparatory Christian school that is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Texas Association of Boarding Schools. The Academy was founded in 1907; its mission is to educate young men and women within a nurturing community based upon Christian values. The Academy accepts boarding students in grades 6–12 and day students in grades K-12. Enrollment in 2009 was 274, with about 75% in the residence program. The school is located in the Texas Hill Country in San Marcos, Texas, United States, south of Austin, and north of San Antonio.
George Washington Truett, also known as George W. Truett, was an American clergyman who was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, from 1897 until 1944, and the president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1927 to 1929. He was one of the "most famous Southern Baptist" preachers and writers of his era.
Truett McConnell University is a private Baptist university in Cleveland, Georgia. It is operated under the auspices of the Georgia Baptist Convention and controlled by a board of trustees elected by the convention. The university was named to honor George W. Truett and Fernando C. McConnell.
George W. Truett Theological Seminary is a Baptist theological seminary in Waco, Texas. The seminary, named after Southern Baptist preacher George Washington Truett, was founded in 1993 as part of Baylor University and is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Russell H. Dilday is a pastor, educator, former seminary president, and chancellor of B.H. Carroll Theological Institute. He is best known for his tenure as President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary until his abrupt dismissal in 1994 during the Southern Baptist Convention conservative resurgence.
Alfred Charles Finn was an American architect. He started in the profession with no formal training in 1904 as an apprentice for Sanguinet & Staats. He worked in their offices in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston. His credits during his tenure residential structures, but firm was a leader in steel-frame construction of skyscrapers.
The Baptist University of the Américas (BUA) is a private Baptist university in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded in 1947. It was previously known as the Mexican Baptist Training School, the Mexican Baptist Bible Institute, the Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary and the Hispanic Baptist Theological School. The school is associated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Second Baptist Church Houston is a megachurch in Houston, Texas, USA that currently has a membership of over 83,000. Its senior pastor is Dr. Ed Young. Second Baptist Church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. A 2008 survey by Outreach magazine gave attendance at 23,659. In 2009 average weekly attendance was 22,723, making it one of the nation's largest churches. As of 2020 their weekly attendance had grown to over 32,000.
The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSCNC) is an autonomous association of Baptist churches in the state of North Carolina. It is one of the state conventions associated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, the convention is made up of 77 Baptist associations and around 4,300 churches as of 2012. The convention is led by three officers, elected annually during the annual meeting of the convention. The three officers elected to serve the convention for 2019 are: President, Rev. Steve Scoggins, First Vice-President, Dr. Micheal Pardue, and Second Vice-President, Rev. Matt Ledbetter. The convention is also led by an Executive Director-Treasurer (EDT). The current EDT is Rev. Milton A. Hollifield, Jr who was elected by the convention in April 2006.

Sanguinet & Staats was an architectural firm based in Fort Worth, Texas, with as many as five branch offices in Texas. The firm specialized in steel-frame construction and built many skyscrapers in Texas. The firm also accepted commissions for residential buildings, and designed many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The JW Marriott Downtown Houston is a hotel located at 806 Main Street in Downtown Houston, which opened in 2014. It had been previously known as the Carter Building, and was the tallest building in Texas when it opened in 1910. The building was renamed Second National Bank Building in 1923.
Temple Baptist Church/King Solomon Baptist Church consists of two buildings at the intersection of Fourteenth Avenue and Marquette Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The original church, which later became known as the Educational and Recreation Building, is a Tudor Revival structure built by architect J. Will Wilson in 1917, then remodeled and made into classrooms and office space by 1940. The second building, also known as the Main Auditorium, is an Art Deco building constructed in 1937 and remains largely unchanged. The buildings are now owned by King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church.

James L. Autry House is located at 5 Courtlandt Place in Houston, Texas, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Design is credited to Alfred C. Finn, when he worked for the Fort Worth architecture firm of Sanguinet & Staats, and was executed in 1912. Autry was a general counsel and director for Texaco.
