South Portland Armory

The South Portland Armory is an historic armory building in South Portland, Maine, United States. The structure was built in 1941 to support nearby U.S. war production for World War II, including the building of liberty ships. It was built in the Art Deco style and was used by the Maine National Guard until 1996. In 2012, it was listed on Greater Portland Landmarks' Places in Peril list. [1]

This fact has become a selling point for the island, marketing the area as "car free" and "kid friendly". The island was used as a military base starting in the late 19th century and continuing through World War II. After the base was decommissioned, the bunkers and residences were left idle for over 30 years before being developed and sold to private citizens.

The great fire of Portland, Maine, sometimes known as the 1866 great fire of Portland, occurred on July 4, 1866—the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. Five years before the Great Chicago Fire, this was the greatest fire yet seen in an American city. It started in a boat house on Commercial Street, likely caused by a firecracker or a cigar ash. The fire spread to a lumber yard and on to a sugar house, then spread across the city, eventually burning out on Munjoy Hill in the city's east end. Two people died in the fire. Ten thousand people were made homeless and 1,800 buildings were burned to the ground. This included the federal Exchange Building by which was replaced with the custom house. Soon after the fire, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow described his old home town: "Desolation! Desolation! Desolation! It reminds me of Pompeii, the 'sepult city'."

The New England Shipbuilding Corporation was a shipyard located in the city of South Portland, Maine, United States. The yard originated as two separate entities, the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation and the South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation, which were created in 1940 and 1941 respectively, in order to meet the demand created by World War II. The two merged in 1943, then continued to produce ships as the New England Shipbuilding Corporation's East Yard and West Yard. New England Shipbuilding ranked 97th among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts. Both closed at the end of the war.

The Fifth Maine Regiment Community Center is a historic building at 45 Seashore Avenue on Peaks Island, an island neighborhood of Portland, Maine in Casco Bay. It was built in 1888 by American Civil War veterans "as a memorial to their deceased comrades and as a reunion hall for themselves." It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a Greater Portland Landmark in 1984. Today it is open as a museum.

The Baxter Building is an historic building located at 619 Congress Street in downtown Portland, Maine. Completed in 1888, it served as the Portland Public Library from its founding until 1978, when the Library moved to another location on Congress Street. The building went unused from 1978 to 1983, when it was purchased by the Maine College of Art (MECA). MECA utilized the space for studio space, dark rooms, as a computer lab and library. In 2010, MECA sold the building to Northland Enterprises LLC, which then leased it to the VIA Group.

Veterans Memorial Bridge is a bridge in Maine, United States, connecting the cities of Portland and South Portland. The bridge spans the Fore River and is part of U.S. Route 1. The original Veterans Memorial Bridge was built in 1954, and was described as 'rapidly deteriorating' prior to its demolition. Designated a top infrastructure priority by Maine state government, a new bridge was built between 2010 and 2012. General contractor Reed & Reed, of Woolwich, was awarded the rebuilding contractor. Reed & Reed estimated the new bridge would stand for a century.

The Fidelity Trust building is an historic office building in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. When the 10-story structure was completed in 1910, it became Maine's first skyscraper. Standing at 135 feet tall, it was designed by Boston architect George Henri Desmond. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style, the Fidelity Trust Building changed Portland's skyline. The building opened to great fanfare. It is listed as an historic Portland Landmark.

The Press Herald Building is an historic building in Portland, Maine built in 1923 and expanded in 1948. It is strategically located across Congress Street from Portland City Hall. It was occupied by the Portland Press Herald newspaper until 2010. In 2015, the renovated building reopened as the Press Hotel.

The Central Fire Station is an historic fire station in Portland, Maine. Built between 1924 and 1925, it is home to the Portland Fire Department. In 2019, Greater Portland Landmarks listed it alongside Portland's other fire stations as "places in peril," though this designation was disputed by a city spokesperson. Adjacent to the building is The Fireman Statue, which was designed and created in 1898 from North Jay granite and located on the property in 1987. Nearby landmarks include Lincoln Park, Portland City Hall, the Press Herald Building, and the Edward T. Gignoux United States Courthouse.

The B&M Baked Beans factory is an historic cannery building in Portland, Maine, USA. The building was constructed in 1913 in the East Deering neighborhood by the Burnham & Morrill Company. Baked beans were produced in the building until 2021. The building is a prominent landmark highly visible from Interstate 295. After its closure, it was sold to Northeastern University, which plans to develop the Roux Institute on the 13.5 acre property. In 2022, it was designated a landmark by the City of Portland.
