South Tyneside Youth Orchestra

South Tyneside Youth Orchestra (STYO), now known as 'South Tyneside Orchestra' is an orchestra based in South Tyneside in the North East of England. It consists of over 40 amateur musicians, many ex pupils of the South Tyneside Music Service.

An orchestra is a large instrumental ensemble typical of classical music, which mixes instruments from different families, including bowed string instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and double bass, as well as brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments, each grouped in sections. Other instruments such as the piano and celesta may sometimes appear in a fifth keyboard section or may stand alone, as may the concert harp and, for performances of some modern compositions, electronic instruments.

South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear in North East England.

North East England is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of NUTS for statistical purposes. It covers Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and the area of the former county of Cleveland in North Yorkshire. The region is home to three large conurbations: Teesside, Wearside, and Tyneside, the last of which is the largest of the three and the eighth most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom. The orchestra, and other ensembles from South Tyneside Music Service, were the first LEA Music Service to showcase talent at the then new Sage Gateshead. They have also performed at other notable venues in the North East such as Newcastle City Hall, The Sunderland Empire Theatre and The Customs House, South Shields.

Sage Gateshead is a concert venue and also a centre for musical education, located in Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne, in North East England. It opened in 2004 and is occupied by the North Music Trust.

Monkseaton is a village absorbed into Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, in the North East of England. North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (NEAS) is the authority responsible for providing NHS ambulance services in North East England, covering the counties of County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear and the area of the former county of Cleveland in North Yorkshire. The trust was formed on 1 July 2006, following the merger of the existing North East Ambulance Service and the Tees division of the Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service (TENYAS). Northumbria Ambulance Service and County Durham Ambulance Service had previously merged on 1 April 1999.

The whole council was up for election with boundary changes since the last election in 2003 reducing the number of seats by 6. The Labour party stayed in overall control of the council.
