Sowmya Rajendran is an Indian writer. She is the winner of Sahitya Akademi's 2015 Bal Sahitya Puraskar and has written over 20 books. She has written young adult fiction, picture books and inspirational books for children. [2]
Rajendran's writing challenges, among other diverse issues, the stereotypical notions of beauty. Her book, The Pleasant Rakshasha, recounts the tale of Karimuga, a demon who is both pleasant and beautiful. The Boy Who Asked Why depicts the story of a young B. R. Ambedkar while Wings to Fly depicts para-athlete Malathi Holla. [2] The Lesson, released on International Women's Day 2015, began as a blogpost and sarcastically discusses gender-based violence, discrimination and the institution of marriage. [3] The Weightlifting Princess (2019) depicts a princess who is passionate about weightlifting. [4] Suddenly Cow is a funny story about a cow that appears suddenly.
Mayil Will Not Be Quiet has its 12-year-old protagonist, Mayil Ganesan, explore some issues like gender stereotyping and is written in the diary format. This book went on to win her the 2015 Bal Sahitya Puraskar awarded by the Sahitya Akademi. [2] The book was published in 2011 and was written in collaboration with Niveditha Subramaniam. The book has two sequels, Mostly Madly Mayil (2013) and This is Me, Mayil (2019). Mayil, the protagonist of the series, lives in Chennai and opines about the events that happen around her, including gender discrimination, domestic violence, identity politics, sexual harassment and caste conflict. Girls to the Rescue is an alternate retelling of conventional fairy tales. In this version of The Frog Prince , the princess chooses to not marry the frog chosen as her spouse by her family. This story was chosen for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Class VI textbook. Further, this book's version of Cinderella has the largest feet in the kingdom and does not immediately agree to prince's marriage proposal and instead invites him for dinner. Rajendran's first book was The Underwater Friends, which was later published as a series of picture books. It was written while she was still pursuing her master's degree in Gender Studies. [1]
Rajendran is based in Pashan, Pune District. She has a masters in Gender studies from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. She has a daughter, born in 2011, named Adhira. [1] As a child, Rajendran enjoyed reading Enid Blyton, Alfred Hitchcock, Premchand, RK Narayan, Agatha Christie and children's magazines like Tinkle , Chandamama , Gokulam and Champak . [5]
Leela Nambudiripad, known by her pen name Sumangala, was an Indian author of children's literature in Malayalam. Some of her notable works included Neypaayasam, Mithayippoti, as well as translations of the Panchatantra into Malayalam.
Nabaneeta Dev Sen was an Indian writer and academic. After studying arts and comparative literature, she moved to US where she studied further. She returned to India and taught at several universities and institutes as well as served on various positions in literary institutes. She published more than 80 books in Bengali: poetry, novels, short stories, plays, literary criticism, personal essays, travelogues, humour writing, translations and children's literature. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1999.
Sugathakumari was an Indian poet and activist, who was at the forefront of environmental and feminist movements in Kerala, South India. Her parents were the poet and freedom fighter Bodheswaran and V. K. Karthiyayini Amma, a Sanskrit scholar. She was the founder secretary of the Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, an organisation for the protection of nature, and of Abhaya, a home for destitute women and a day-care centre for the mentally ill. She chaired the Kerala State Women's Commission. She played a prominent role in the Save Silent Valley protest.
Lalithambika Antharjanam was an Indian author and social reformer best known for her literary works in Malayalam language. She was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and social reform movements among the Nambuthiri caste led by V. T. Bhattathiripaatu and her writing reflects a sensitivity to the women's role in society, in the family and as an individual. Her published oeuvre consists of nine volumes of short stories, six collections of poems, two books for children, and a novel, Agnisakshi (1976) which won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977. Her autobiography Aathmakadhakkoru Aamukham is also considered a significant work in Malayalam literature.
Kumarpal Balabhai Desai is an author, critic, editor, journalist, columnist and translator from Gujarat, India. He studied and later taught at the Gujarat University. He is associated with several social and Gujarati literary organisations such as Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. He has written and edited more than hundred books including biographies and several works on Jainism. He is awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.

Damodar Mauzo is a Goan short story writer, novelist, critic and script writer in Konkani. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for the novel Karmelin and the Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar award for his novel Tsunami Simon in 2011. His collection of Short stories Teresa's Man and Other Stories from Goa was nominated for the Frank O'Connor International award in 2015. He has served as a member of the executive board, general council, as well as the finance committee of the Sahitya Akademi.

Kithaab, also Kitab, is a Malayalam-language play featuring a humorous portrayal of a young girl who dreams of calling out the Azaan (vaang), the Islamic call to worship normally recited by a male muezzin or mukri. The girl questions the subjugation of women in her community, and rebels against community norms by dancing with her friends, stealing food denied to her, and demanding the opportunity to call the vaang.
Sabeena Rafi was an Indian essayist and historian of Malayalam literature. Her oeuvre consists of philosophical works, an autobiography and Chavittu Nadakam - Oru Charithra Padanam, the first historical compendium on Chavittu Nadakam, an operatic dance form. Her book, Kaliyugam, a philosophical work jointly written with her husband, Ponjikkara Rafi, fetched her the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Miscellaneous Works in 1972.
Paro Anand is an Indian author of books for children, young adults and adults including novels, short stories and plays. She won the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puruskar in 2017 for her anthology Wild Child and Other Stories . She has spoken about and written extensively on children's literature in India. She headed the National Centre for Children's Literature at the National Book Trust India, the apex body for children's literature in India. She also runs a podcast on HubHopper called Literature in Action, and was an invitee to the India Conference at the Harvard Business School in 2018.

Her book, Mystery of the House of Pigeons, was adapted into a television series for Doordarshan as Khoj Khazana Khojher. Most of her books are in the genres of historical fiction and non-fiction, but she also wrote travelogues, comic strips and detective and ghost stories.
