Speech (foaled February 12, 2017) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2020 Ashland Stakes. [1]

Career

Speech's first race was on November 15, 2019, at Del Mar Racetrack, where she came in third. Speech picked up her first win in her second start on December 14, 2019, at Los Alamitos Race Course. [1]

She competed in her first stakes race on March 8, 2020, at the Grade-3 Santa Ysabel Stakes and came in 2nd place, behind Donna Veloce. This was Speech's first two-turn race. [2]

Speech's next race was on May 2, 2020, at Oaklawn Park, where she picked up a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming race.

On June 6, 2020, Speech competed in the Grade-2 Santa Anita Oaks. She finished four lengths behind the victor, Swiss Skydiver, but finished over seven lengths ahead of Merneith. The result gave Speech 40 qualification points towards the 2020 Kentucky Oaks. [3]

Speech won the most important race of her career on July 11, 2020, when she captured the Grade-1 Ashland Stakes. She came into the race with 4:1 odds as the third favorite horse and won by 3 lengths in an upset. [4] This victory qualified her for the 2020 Kentucky Oaks.

Beholder is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and multiple Eclipse Award winner. Her most memorable performance was defeating the champion filly Songbird by a nose in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Her other notable wins include the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, the Breeders' Cup Distaff x 2, the Pacific Classic, and the Vanity Stakes. She is also the first horse since 1976 to win a Grade One race at age 2, 3, 4, and 5, and one of only two horses to have ever won three Breeders' Cup races.

Sweet Catomine is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing second on her racecourse debut as a two-year-old in July 2004, she emerged as the best juvenile filly of her generation in the United States, winning the Del Mar Debutante Stakes, Oak Leaf Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies before being voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In the following spring she won the Santa Ysabel Stakes and Santa Anita Oaks and was considered a serious contender for the Kentucky Derby before finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby and was retired from racing shortly afterwards. Her run in the Santa Anita Derby was controversial as there were allegations that her connections had not been fully open about her training problems. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in North America in 1999, winning four of her six races including the Frizette Stakes and the Hollywood Starlet Stakes as well a finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Stellar Wind is an American Thoroughbred racehorse, known for her Eclipse Award winning three-year-old season, and later for her rivalry with the champion mare Beholder. Bred in Virginia, she raced in Maryland as a juvenile, winning one minor race from two starts. As a three-year-old, racing mainly in California, she improved to become arguably the best filly of her generation. Monomoy Girl is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of 2018 and Champion Older Female Horse of 2020. She showed very promising form as a juvenile in 2017 when she won her first three races before being narrowly beaten in the Golden Rod Stakes. In the following spring, she took the Rachel Alexandra Stakes and the Ashland Stakes before winning the Kentucky Oaks, the filly equivalent of the Kentucky Derby.
