The women's 1000 metres speed skating competition of the 2014 Sochi Olympics was held at Adler Arena Skating Center on 13 February 2014. [1]
A total of thirty-six speed skaters could qualify for this distance, with a maximum of four skaters per country. The top 20 of the 2013–14 ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Women's 1000 metres standings after the fourth World Cup race in Berlin secured a spot for their country. Then the additional 16 spots were awarded based on a time ranking of all times skated in the World Cup and the 2014 World Sprint Speed Skating Championships. A reserve list was also made. [2]

On 24 November 2017, Russian athlete Olga Fatkulina was disqualified for a doping offence. [5] In January 2018, she successfully appealed against the disqualification at the court of arbitration for sport. [6]

Martina Sáblíková from the Czech Republic, the defending champion, finished second, while Olga Graf won the bronze medal.

The women's skeleton event at the 2014 Winter Olympics took place at the Sliding Center Sanki on 13–14 February. In the first run, Lizzy Yarnold established the track record of 58.43 seconds and the start record of 4.95 seconds. The start record was improved to 4.89 seconds in the same run by Elena Nikitina. In the third run, Yarnold improved her own track record to 57.91. Winning all four runs, Yarnold became the Olympic champion; Noelle Pikus-Pace of the United States won silver, and Nikitina became the bronze medalist. Each of them won their first Olympic medal. Yarnold's medal was the first gold medal for Great Britain at the 2014 Olympics.
