The Organizing Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi is the organization responsible for the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. [1] It was established on 2 October 2007 by the Russian Olympic Committee, the Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sports, and the Administration of the City of Sochi.
The 2014 Winter Paralympics, the 11th Paralympic Winter Games, and also more generally known as the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, were an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), held in Sochi, Russia from 7 to 16 March 2014. 45 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) participated in the Games, which marked the first time Russia ever hosted the Paralympics. The Games featured 72 medal events in five sports, and saw the debut of snowboarding at the Winter Paralympics.

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) was the organization responsible for the 2002 Winter Olympics and 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City, USA. The SLOC secured their bid for the 2002 Olympic Games in 1995. After the SLOC was exposed to be in disarray in the ensuing years, Mitt Romney was hired in 1999 to turn around the failing organization. Under Romney's leadership, the SLOC ended up hosting a successful Olympic games with financial surpluses.

Salzburg 2014 was an unsuccessful bid by the Austrian Olympic Committee to host the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics in Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg was one of seven applicants for the games, and one of three to be short-listed, along with Sochi, Russia, and Pyeongchang, South Korea. It was the second consecutive time Salzburg bid for the Winter Olympics, after the close call with the 2010 bid, and the four consecutive time Austria bid, having bid with Graz in 2002 and Klagenfurt in 2006. The 2014 bid is more compact than the 2010 project due to the elimination of the Kitzbühel, St. Johann and Ramsau venues. One venue is located in Germany.

This was also the second consecutive Winter Olympic opening ceremony to be held in an indoor stadium.

Iran sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia from 7–16 March 2014. This was Iran's fifth time participating in a Winter Paralympic Games. The Iranian delegation consisted of a single alpine skier, Sadegh Kalhor, who had his leg amputated in a skiing accident as a teenager. In the standing slalom event, he finished in 20th place.
Sukki, Nokki, Lekki and Tsukki, also known as the Snowlets are the mascots of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and are four snowy owls. They represent respectively fire (Sukki), air (Nokki), earth (Lekki) and water (Tsukki) and together they represent the four major islands of Japan. The choice of four mascots is a nod to the four years that make up an Olympiad. In addition, the first two letters of the four names form the word “snowlets”. The first two letters of each of the other owls’ names spell out the second part of “snowlets,” being “lets”. “Snow” recalls the winter season, during which the Games take place, and “lets” refers to “let’s”, an invitation to join in the Games celebrations. “Owlets” means young owls. The four Snowlets' names were chosen from among 47,484 suggestions. The mascots are a creation of Landor Associates. The agency responsible for creating the mascots was the same one that designed the torch for the Atlanta Games in 1996, and also took part in designing the mascots for Salt Lake City 2002.
