[2] It was founded in 1956, operates 70 offices in 33 countries and is privately owned, making SSI the largest privately held search firm in the world. The firm generates over 1 billion dollars in revenue annually, passing this threshold for the first time in 2021. Spencer Stuart began in its early years as a boutique consultancy, being one of the first executive search firms to conduct international and domestic projects. In recent years the firm has grown into a larger consultancy: offering capabilities in leadership training, strategic planning, digital transformation and executive coaching, alongside their longstanding executive search business.
Notable placements by Spencer Stuart include the Yahoo! board of directors retained the firm in June 2012 to conduct a search to replace former CEO Scott Thompson.
