The season featured a heavyweight and a welterweight division, with 9 fighters initially in each division. The UFC coaches for this season were welterweight and middleweight champions Matt Hughes and Rich Franklin. Season 1 coach and former UFC champion Randy Couture hosted and designed the team challenge segments, which if won would allow the winning team to pair a fighter from their team against another in elimination matches. The finale aired on November 5, 2005, and it set a ratings record for the UFC with a 2.0 overall rating. This season featured no coaches' fight because Hughes and Franklin had refused to fight each other, owing to their friendship. Although released on DVD in 2005, it has been set for re-release on September 18, 2007.

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra was the sixth season of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) produced reality television series The Ultimate Fighter, and premiered on September 19, 2007, on Spike TV, after UFC Fight Night 11. This season featured only welterweight fighters. The teams were coached by current UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes. The coaches were to fight for the welterweight title after the completion of the show, on December 29 at UFC 79. However, due to an injury sustained by Serra, Hughes instead faced former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre for the interim title, with St-Pierre defeating Hughes by submission in the second round and going on to challenge Serra for the undisputed welterweight title at UFC 83.

Former UFC women's bantamweight champion and current UFC women's featherweight champion Amanda Nunes and UFC women's bantamweight champion Julianna Peña will coach the season of TUF and the show will feature contestants at heavyweights and women's flyweights will be featured on the season. The pair was initially expected to meet on August 7, 2021, at UFC 265 in a title bout, However, Nunes tested positive for COVID-19 on July 29 and the bout was cancelled. The fight was rescheduled and eventually took place at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021 where Peña won the championship by submitting Nunes. The two coaches met again for the bantamweight title at UFC 277, where Nunes regained her title in a unanimous decision.
