The principality of Liechtenstein encompasses most of the eastern half of the Rhine Valley, wedged between Austria and Switzerland. Sportpark Eschen-Mauren is a multi-sport complex in Eschen, Liechtenstein. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of USV Eschen/Mauren as well as Liechtenstein national youth football teams. It was the national stadium of Liechtenstein national football team until 1998 when the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz opened. Sportpark Eschen-Mauren, opened in 1975, has 500 covered seats and a total capacity of 2000.

Franz Burgmeier is a Liechtenstein former professional footballer, who played as a midfielder. Born in Triesen, Burgmeier was a burgeoning footballer and keen skier, until he gave up the latter sport at 16 following a serious injury. Having been a youth player for Triesen, he started his professional career with Vaduz. Burgmeier won several Liechtensteiner Cups with Vaduz, who were promoted to the Swiss Challenge League in 2001, and played in the UEFA Cup. After two unsuccessful attempts to win promotion to the Swiss Super League, Burgmeier left for Aarau in 2005. He spent only one season with Aarau before a move to the previous season's runners-up Basel in 2006. His two seasons with Basel were broken up by a loan spell with Thun, before he moved to England with Darlington in August 2008, where he played for one year.

The 1934 Liechtenstein Football Championship was the first as all Liechtenstein clubs were not only members of the Swiss FA but also of the cantonal Sankt Gallen federation, who had placed all Liechtenstein club in one regional group, whose winners were declared champions of Liechtenstein. The 1937 edition had only one participant, so the championship was awarded without any matches being played. No further editions were played.
