Spray-on clothing

Spray-on clothing is a form of clothing, that is applied by spraying polymer over the body in such a manner that it appears as clothing. It is a polymer mix that dries relatively quickly. [1]

On September 15, 2010, Ian Sample, The Guardian 's Science correspondent reported on a press conference where Dr Manuel Torres showed a spray-on clothing product named Fabrican. [2] Covering the same announcement Prita Ganapati, writing for Wired magazine referred to the result as "spray-on fabric". [3] The Guardian referred to both "spray-on bandages" and "spray-on fabric". Scientific American referred to both "spray-on clothing" and "spray-on clothes". [1] Torres described the fabric as similar to felt.

The fit of a made-to-measure garment is expected to be superior to that of a ready-to-wear garment because made-to-measure garments are constructed to fit each customer individually based on a few body measurements to customize the pre-existing pattern. Made-to-measure garments always involve some form of standardization in the pattern and manufacturing, whereas bespoke tailoring is entirely made from scratch based on a customer's specifications with far more attention to minute fit details and using multiple fittings during the construction process. All else being equal, a made-to-measure garment will be more expensive than a ready-to-wear garment but cheaper than a bespoke one. "Custom made" most often refers to MTM.

Fabrican is an instant spray-on fabric technology. The spray-on material is made from polymers and natural or synthetic fibers. The spray is delivered from a compressed air spray gun or aerosol can and dries upon contact with the air, creating a non-woven fabric that can be applied to many surfaces. The material is sterile when it is dispensed from the spray gun or aerosol can.

Wrinkle-resistant or permanent press or durable press is a finishing method for textiles that avoids creases and wrinkles and provides a better appearance for the articles. Most cellulosic fabrics and blends of cellulosic rich fabrics tend to crease or wrinkle. A durable press finish makes them dimensionally stable and crease free. The finishing includes chemical finishing as well as mechanical finishing. Wrinkle-resistant finishes were developed in the early 20th century, as a way to deal with fabrics derived from cotton, rayon, and linen, which were found to wrinkle easily and retain the wrinkles. These treatments have a lasting effect on the fabric. Synthetics like polyester, nylon, acrylic and olefin, have a natural resistance to wrinkles and a greater stability since they do not absorb water as efficiently.
