Initially M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar was to play the lead role. After a few shots were taken with director Raja Chandrasekhar, Bhagavathar was arrested as a suspect in the Lakshmikanthan murder case. He was replaced with Bangalore-based Honnappa Bhagavathar. Raja Chandrasekhar walked out not willing to work with the newcomer.[ citation needed ] Producer M. Somasundaram directed the film along with V. S. Narayanan (who is the husband of Bhanumathi's sister).
MGR was cast in the role of Lord Shiva. He performed the Shiva Thandavam dance with Telugu actress K. Malathi. The dance was a highlight of the film and MGR worked hard and performed well. His performance impressed all and this laid the foundation for him to play as hero in Jupiter's next film Rajakumari. [1]
Music was composed by S. M. Subbaiah Naidu and S. V. Venkatraman while the lyrics were penned by Papanasam Sivan. [1]

Dhaasippen, also Dhaasippenn is a 1943 Tamil-language film directed by Ellis R. Dungan and produced by Bhuvaneswai Pictures. The lead actors are T. R. Mahalingam and M. G. Ramachandran. The film was scored by Lalitha Venkatraman and S. Rajeswara Rao. The film has had three other titles: Jyothi Malar, Dasi Penn and Thumbai Mahatmyam, and Jothi Malar. The film is based on a folk tale about a girl becoming a devadasi and dedicating her life to worshipping Lord Shiva and refusing to follow the traditional path of marrying a man. Dhaasippen performed well and became a box office hit. But no print of the film is known to survive, making it a lost film.

The film revolves around a king being replaced by a look-alike after getting abducted on the eve of his coronation. The look-alike begins to implement social and economic reforms to uplift the poor which irks the kingdom's high priest, who has kidnapped the very person the look-alike resembles. The rest of the film shows how the look-alike saves the man he impersonates and defeats the high priest.

His career lasted until his death in 1963. During the 1950s G.Ramanathan's music dominated most of the box office hits of the then leading Tamil movie stars Shivaji Ganesan and M. G. Ramachandran.
