St. Joseph's Health is a not-for-profit healthcare network in Central New York. It is anchored by St. Joseph's Health Hospital with 451 inpatient beds, located in the near Northside of Syracuse. Since 2015, St. Joseph's Health has been a division of Trinity Health .
In the mid-nineteenth century, many German and Irish migrants worked on the Erie and Oswego canals, the railroad, or for salt producers. As the area was growing rapidly, eight Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia came to Syracuse in March 1860 to teach at Assumption School and St. Joseph's in Utica. Later that year, they became a separate community, the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse. Working out of St. Anthony's Convent, they soon began to provide at-home care for the sick. In 1869, the sisters purchased the Samsel property on Prospect Hill, a former dance hall and saloon, and on May 6, opened St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse's first public hospital. [1] Sister Dominic was in charge, assisted by Sisters Mechtildes, Veronica, Johanna, and Hyacinthe. The hospital had a unique charter for its time; open to caring for the sick without distinction as to nationality, religion, or color. [2]
Mother Marianne Cope served as St. Joe’s administrator from 1870 to 1877. [3] In 1883 she relocated with six other sisters to Hawaiʻi to care for persons suffering leprosy on the island of Molokaʻi and aid in developing the medical infrastructure in Hawaiʻi. Cope was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012. [4]
In 1871 Geneva Medical College was transferred to Syracuse University. [5] One of the reasons for the move was that Syracuse had a hospital. Many of the city's businessmen and politicians supported the work of the hospital. In 1878 mayor James J. Belden formed a committee of citizens, St. Joseph's Hospital Aid Society, to look after the interests of St. Joseph's. Local businessman John R. Clancy served as financial secretary. Dennis McCarthy followed Theodore Dissel as president; he was later followed by Burns Lyman Smith and Harvey D. Burrill of the Syracuse Journal. [6]
The hospital was enlarged in 1882 by an addition, and again in 1896 with the construction of a large annex. [7] The new hospital chapel was dedicated May 17, 1897. The school of nursing opened in 1898. [2] The school of nursing opened in 1898. [2] St. Joseph's College of Nursing offers an applied science degree with a major in nursing. A Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN) with Le Moyne College allows students to achieve both an associate and a baccalaureate degree in four years. [8]
In July 1918, St. Joseph’s was one of a number of local hospitals providing emergency care to those injured in an explosion of TNT at the munitions factory at Split Rock. [9]
In 1969, on its 100th anniversary, St. Joseph's Hospital changed its name to "St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center" to reflect the greater scope of services provided. [9]
In 1971 St. Joseph's appointed its first lay administrator. That same year saw the creation of the Home Health Care Agency. In 1994, St. Joe's instituted a primary care program at a number of off-campus sites. [9]
In April 2016, St. Joseph's added twenty new beds to its critical care unit. [10] In 2016, St. Joseph's settlement with state and federal prosecutors for $3.2 million for employing unlicensed mental health counselors. President and CEO, Kathy Ruscitto, said it was a billing issue arising from "...a misinterpretation of unclear regulations..." [11]
In 2004, the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse merged with two other Franciscan congregations to form the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.
The Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) with 10 beds was added in 2017, so patients with mental health crises may be treated in a specialized environment.
The hospital added a heliport in 2018. [12] In April 2020, in response to New York State's directive for hospitals to halt elective surgeries as a COVID-19 precaution, St Joseph's furloughed 500 employees, linking the move to the suspension of outpatient procedures. [13]
In 2015, St. Joseph’s Health was acquired by Trinity Health, one of the nation’s biggest health systems. [14] On July 1, the sisters transferred sponsorship of St. Joseph Health to Trinity Health's Catholic Health Ministries. [15] [16] St. Joseph's Home Health Care provides care for adults and children with physical and mental health care needs and assure continuity of care for patients discharged from the hospital. [17] St. Joseph's Health-At-Home is based in Liverpool, New York. Its services include a military and veterans health care program.
In February 2019, St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute opened an office on Oneida Health’s campus in Oneida. [18]
In June 2022, it was announced that St. Joseph’s Health would consolidate its administrative functions with Albany's St. Peter's Health Partners to create a single regional operation. [19]

In 2017, Rome Memorial Hospital became an affiliate of St. Joseph's Health for easier access to specialty care. [23] (In 2021 Rome Memorial Hospital adopted Rome Health as its new name to more accurately reflect the scope of services provided.) [24] [25] [22]
In 2017, Auburn Community Hospital signed an agreement with St. Joseph's Health and the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) which allows for shared services while maintaining their independence. [22] This includes retaining the name "Auburn Community Hospital" (ACH). [26]
Marianne Cope, OSF, was a German-born American religious sister who was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, New York, and founding leader of its St. Joseph's Hospital in the city, among the first of 50 general hospitals in the country. Known also for her charitable works, in 1883 she relocated with six other sisters to Hawaiʻi to care for persons suffering leprosy on the island of Molokaʻi and aid in developing the medical infrastructure in Hawaiʻi. Despite direct contact with the patients over many years, Cope did not contract the disease.
St. Joseph's Health Centre is a large teaching hospital in western Toronto, Ontario. It is located west of downtown Toronto, along the Lake Ontario shore at the intersection of The Queensway and Sunnyside Avenue, just west of Roncesvalles Avenue. It was founded in 1921 by the Sisters of St. Joseph order on the site of an orphanage. The same order also founded St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto in 1892.
The Lourdes Health System was a pair of two hospitals, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey and Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro, New Jersey. Administrative offices are located at its Camden facility. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany founded the health system in 1950 and is a member of Trinity Health. On July 1, 2019 Virtua Health purchased both locations from Trinity Health and renamed them.
St. Mary’s Health System, a member of Covenant Health, was founded in 1888 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint-Hyacinthe. Today, it is an integrated medical system comprising a 233-bed acute care community hospital, an employed group of primary care and specialty providers, urgent care and emergency department, an extensive complement of behavioral and mental health services and outpatient specialty practices. The system also includes d’Youville Pavilion, a senior care community that offers a rehabilitation center, long-term skilled nursing care and memory care. Its historic Saint Mary's General Hospital building, built in 1902, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
St. Elizabeth Health Services is a private Roman Catholic hospital in Baker City, Oregon, United States. It opened August 24, 1897 as St. Elizabeth Hospital. In 1912, a 115-bed facility was constructed at 2365 4th Street. The hospital moved to its current location on Pocahontas Road in April 1969.

Covenant Health System is an American health care provider which serves West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. It has about 1,300 beds in its five primary acute-care and specialty hospitals; it also manages about a dozen affiliated community hospitals. Covenant Health System, part of the St. Joseph Health System, also maintains a network of family health care and medical clinics. Covenant Health System's major facilities are Covenant Medical Center, Covenant Specialty Hospital, and Covenant Children's Hospital. The health system also includes some 20 clinics and 50 physician practices, and its extensive outreach programs target isolated rural communities with mobile services. Covenant Health was founded in 1998 through the merger of two of Lubbock's health care facilities, St. Mary of the Plains Hospital and the Lubbock Methodist Hospital System.
St. Joseph's Church, also known as St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, is a historic Roman Catholic church complex at 704-708 Columbia Street in Utica, Oneida County, New York. The complex consists of the church, St. Joseph's Parochial School (1885), St. Joseph's Parochial Residence (1906), and Parish Convent building (1891). The parish is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse.
The Sisters of Charity of Australia, or the Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Charity of Australia, is a congregation of religious sisters in the Catholic Church established in 1838. Sisters use the post-nominal initials of RSC.
Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is a non-profit health system providing services to residents of the Mohawk Valley in Central New York. It was created in 2014 as an affiliation of Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Medical Center. In October 2023, MVHS moved all acute care beds and emergency services to a new hospital, the Wynn Hospital, in downtown Utica.

St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is a general acute care hospital in Houston, Texas owned by Steward Health Care. Established in June 1887, SJMC is recognized as the first hospital in Houston. A new hospital was constructed in 1894, but was destroyed by fire soon thereafter. The hospital was rebuilt and it underwent major expansions in 1905 and 1938. The hospital was the largest in the city until the Texas Medical Center was established. The hospital has a capacity of 792 beds. A second location was open in the Houston Heights from 2012 to 2019.

Auburn Community Hospital (ACH) is an acute-care medical facility in Auburn, New York. The hospital hosts a VA community-based outpatient clinic. ACH is the largest employer in Cayuga County.
Lewis County General Hospital (LCGH) is a Short Term Acute Care facility in Lowville, New York serving its eponymous county both for medical service and as its largest employer. LCGH is part of "Lewis County Health System".

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities was formed in 2004 with the union of three separate congregations: Sisters of St Francis of Syracuse, Sisters of St. Francis of the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, and the Sisters of St. Francis Third Order Regular of Buffalo. During the process of the reorganization, the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Divine Child merged with the Williamsville Franciscans in 2003. The Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale merged with the congregation in 2007.
